  • I thought I’d made my feelings clear about this.

  • Got a mildly modded Gaggia Classic here that I am looking to advertise soon if anyone interested? OPV mod, Silvia steam wand and a new group seal. Would rather sell here for a discount than succumb to the likes of eBay etc.

  • How can I stop my espresso looking like a Jackson pollock?

    Taste wise and timing wise the shit is good. I’ve tried grinder coarser but the problem persists and also ruins the timing and taste.

    It’s almost like some coffee is getting through the holes and it’s pissing everywhere rather than just the liquid.

    I’m using wdt and giving it a good tamp. I don’t have a distribution tool current.

  • Hi, Niche Zero user thoughts please!

    Got one off ebay recently, been going well but got some properly light roasted beans recently and been having no end of trouble. Just dumping all the beans in tends to stall the motor. Slow feeding with the lid open and pressing the safety switch solves the stalling but even on ridiculously fine setting (6 dots) espresso just gushes through.... Not sure I dare going much finer!

    Any suggestions or should I just accept that beans this light are only really suitable for high end grinders or pour over?

  • Niche is famously not a light roast grinder. I never had issues with stalling on mine but the burr design is aimed around medium/medium-dark roasts. Have a look at the burrs though, they might be worn which could cause issues? I think Niche do replacements

  • Never had an issue with motor stalling and I've use pretty light roast beans for espresso. Assuming you've recalibrated it? Does it work fine when grinding darker roasts?

    Niche are pretty responsive so I would shoot them an email from a cursory glance on reddit theres a few folks who have had to replace the motor to solve similar issues.

  • Yes, it has been good for other beans, but these beans are considerably lighter than anything I have seen before.

    Yes, did the recalibration stuff when I first got it and burrs seems in good condition to me!

  • Is clogging a thing on the Zero? I haven't taken the burrs apart again since getting it, should I be doing that weekly or something?

  • I got a Hario Switch as I wasn't happy with what I was getting out of my V60. Really like it. I have been using a recipe by Tetsu Kasuya that involves dropping the temperature of the water from 92c to 70c for the largest pour in the recipe and its superb. Feel like I'm finally, finally getting what I want out of a filter brewer.

    [Quantity]

    • 20g coffee
    • Hot water over 90 degrees 280g

    [procedure]

    1. Open Switch
    2. [0:00] Pour up to 60g (1st pour 60g)
    3. [0:30] Pour up to 120g (2nd pour 60g)
    4. Pour cold water into the kettle and lower the water temperature to around 70 degrees.
    5. [1:15] Close the Switch and pour up to 280g (3rd pour 160g)
    6. [1:45] Open Switch
    7. [3:00] Approximate amount of dripping (If there is hot water left in the dripper at 3 minutes, close the Switch. Pour hot water into the coffee to adjust the concentration as desired.)

  • It feels like this would be relatively easy to approximate with a V60 inasmuch as after the first 2 pours the paper will be increasingly clogged by fines so the drip rate will slow down.

  • Light still not great but the beans on the right are the light ones and the ones on the left are some other old beans that I presume were intended as light-medium.

  • Was brave in my caffeine deprived state and went all the way down to 1 dot. 18g in, 50g out in 29 seconds... Not sure what that qualifies as but is in the realm of what the roaster recommended! Fairly tasty, shame I've used it all up now...

  • This is the problem I sometimes find with interesting types of bean, that unless you're getting a kg you can go through a decent amount before it's dialled in.

    That being the case I just ordered another 2kg of Guji Flip Flops from dark arts

  • Off the back of recommendations here I just got 1kg of Guji Flip Flops delivered – just made a quick cup with the aeropress and it’s tasting great so far.

    I can see how not having the coffee continuously submerged in the water could possibly help with not imparting some of those duller flavours often associated with cold brew. Might rig up a DIY version and see how it tastes!
