In an ideal world I’d have an Austin 7 race car or maybe a small motor launch…

Woohoo! Knock sensor malfunction. Light came on straight off the bat this morning and then didn't go away. I'm booked in for the 150k service in ten days so I'll let the guy with the spanners figure it out. Mods on hold!

Knock sense CEL usually goes out after 2 or 3 engine starts. It's a warning CEL so doesn't mean you have to stop driving

That explains the on/off nature, thanks. I'm not worried about it but it is a little disconcerting/boring now.

Wow.
It's almost as if they are trying to send a message...

Classic cars are seen as toys for the rich, which is interesting when you see kids driving $1.2M McLarens.
This is the ARF for new cars (plus $105k COE):
Additional registration fee (ARF) 100% for first S$20,000 of OMV
140% for next S$30,000
180% above S$50,000 -

Well yeah, it's a warning. The engine will let you know when it really wants to stop....
Knock sensors stop early detonation from a lean mix right? Driving gently would be advised correct?

Look up what is/was the make up of a knock sensors. They used to made up of ball bearing, attached to the block near to one of the combustion chambers that felt the vibration of pre ignition of the fuel. Known as pinking. As you say lean fuel, too advanced timing. As for advice of being gentle with the throttle would enrichening the mixture help a lean mix.
As for cause and diagnosis not a clue. Could list many things and then just be a loose connection/broken wire.
Edit: lower octane fuel can cause pinking.

I need to drive my dad's car next week, and I don't have my own insurer. What is the best way to get cover?
-
• #79769
Get added as a named driver.
-
• #79770
Will that cost him anything? He is already doing me a favour lending me the car, I don't want to create a load of hassle for him as well.
-
• #79771
Might cost something but not a lot - there isn't another obvious solution.
(edit - apparently there is, however plan a still likely to be a lot cheaper)
-
• #79772
It’s usually a nominal amount unless you’re 17yrs old / Vin Diesel. You could pay the difference yourself - it’ll be cheaper than trying to get some one-off insurance.
-
• #79773
Try an internet search for "short term car insurance" and take it from there. Lots of options.

In theory the Ecu detects knock, pulls timing / add fuel then 'learns" the correction in the map so doesn't happen again. Power drops though.
No idea, but at a guess the haldex service is expensive so gets skipped. Also I think round town short journeys driving makes this worse.
Mine was very very cheap, basically scrap value. As the haldex system had been rebuilt before guy bought it and broke at the beginning of COVID so bought another temp car and couldnt get anyone to look at it. I bought it Sent the pump of to be reconditioned and that sorted it for long enough for me to sell it with MOT.
I'd get the vcds cable from Ali and software from a decent source and read up on what to check.
Depending on the mileage might be worthwhile to check the camchain/tensioner/guides as some of the vr6 engines have issues around 100k miles
Edit allegedly you can guage wear with the vds software.
