    Knock sensors stop early detonation from a lean mix right? Driving gently would be advised correct?

  • Look up what is/was the make up of a knock sensors. They used to made up of ball bearing, attached to the block near to one of the combustion chambers that felt the vibration of pre ignition of the fuel. Known as pinking. As you say lean fuel, too advanced timing. As for advice of being gentle with the throttle would enrichening the mixture help a lean mix.

    As for cause and diagnosis not a clue. Could list many things and then just be a loose connection/broken wire.

    Edit: lower octane fuel can cause pinking.
