Because they're good tyres and they were free and the 40mm one fits fine on the back, and it's barely a few cigarette papers off it being OK on the front. There's heaps of clearance laterally it's just the vertical plane where it doesn't quite work.
The clearance will actually improve in time when the tread wears down anyway.

• #7253
Maybe leave the rear tyre and get the same up front in 37c. The rear will wear out quicker so you can use it as spare.

Probably stupid question, but will a Shimano cassette removal tool work on a miche/campag square taper BB (I’ve seen it suggested in some places) or do I need to get a campag bb tool for my miche BB?

will a Shimano cassette removal tool work on a miche/campag square taper BB
Yes, for those variants where it looks like it should work.
-
• #7256
IIRC it's a bit tight, as in you have to hammer it in and then it's jammed in there good. Pretty sure I slightly tickled one with a grinder once, and there was my Campy BB tool.

I'm mooting angle grinder the lawyer lip off the fork
Have at it. I always file the damn things off my forks anyway...
A bit of bicarb with the super glue will help build it up to hold the spoke bits more securely.

There is a Miche that’s definitely Shimano fitment but I’m sure there’s also one (older maybe) that’s not. Also, you’ll need the one with a larger through hole so that it fits over the spindle, or there’s maybe a longer one?
-
• #7259
You won’t get enough clearance for mudguards with spokes in the forks. Just go down to 35c imo and save the 40 for rhe rear
-
• #7260
Yeah I don't think it will leave enough for guards but it should make it easier to have 35s with guards in the future.
Will update the forum on how this goes in due time. I may just do it by hand with a metal file if I can't find a grinder.
-
• #7261
That tiny little notch is better to do by hand anyways. With an angle grinder it's too uncontrolled.
Note; I think it's a stupid idea to do this and mess with your own safety. -
• #7262
I just don't see the negative safety implication. From my understanding the lawyer lip is completely unnecessary and exists because people couldn't use quick releases properly. My front wheel uses two 15mm nuts.

My front wheel uses two 15mm nuts.
Which won't be fully supported when you have the axle half out of the dropouts. The nuts will precess, the front wheel will fall out, and you'll die. To be fair, you'll also die if you don't carry out your plan, but it will probably take slightly longer.
-
• #7264
Yeah didn't think about the through hole - looks like acquire another tool it is..
-
• #7265
axle half out of the dropouts
Pretty sure that's not being proposed. The lawyer lips are in the way, but the thickness of a spoke won't see the nuts going past them.
Also, I'm having a hard time picturing how precession could apply in the absence of a load circling around... or were you just being facetious?
-
• #7266
just being facetious?
Only partially. Nuts can unwind when there's a cyclic bending load on the male thread, it doesn't have to be a full circle.
The main point is to get a tyre and fork combination which work together without having to do anything sketchy.

I need a new single speed chainring (5 bolt, 130mm BCD, black) and there doesn't seem to be a lot around (unless my google fu is poor). This seems the best I can find. Will this work with a 1/8 chain?

• #7268
The teeth don't look very long for a SS setup. If you could live with silver, I think one of these would be better https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/133391626757?var=432805916763&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&campid=5339055801&toolid=20006&_ul=gb&gad_source=1&customid=c15af384b08431921bd9e29328a01d1c4ae1dc72

TA do them in about 46-53, Gebhardt do all the sizes.

What size do you need? Might have a 42 or 44 sitting around.
-
• #7271
Needs to be black in afraid but I think that they may be a black one from the same seller...
-
• #7272
Thanks for the offer but I'm after 46t or 48t.

What about the teeth on this stronglight?
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/chainrings/48-stronglight-130mm-bcd-5-arm-18-inch-track-chainring-black/I find the Gebhardts a bit too solid looking and this is a bit thinner. If it's not worth it, I'll suck it up and get a Gebhardt :)

• #7274
Looks ideal for if you need to remember who made it

this stronglight?
If you want a very lightly used 48T Stronglight for half that money, hmu

Why do you want 40c in there so badly anyways? Get some 35 or 37c, problem solved
