I quite enjoyed it! It definitely thinks it's more than it is though. It thinks it's an A24 Silence Of The Lambs for the 2020s with a splash of True Detective Season 1 for good measure. It's more of a feature length X Files monster of the week with Nic Cage enjoying being Nic Cage. I bloody love a good X Files monster of the week though.

It's also how I found out my partner is terrified of dolls (we've only been together for 6 years). She didn't sleep properly for a week. Hereditary levels of scary for her.

Yeah I see that. I quite enjoyed the build up but the premise became real dumb as time went on

Hereditary really got to me in the days that followed watching it!

Wait, spoiler-free explanation if possible please but - Longlegs has dolls?
I love a shity Nic Cage film, I enjoy a lot of horror, I do not do dolls or clowns..

Did you watch Poltergeist at a young age?
The clown doll messed me up. Still creeps me the fuck out -

It was Magic that did for me shudders

I agree it was okay. Enjoyable but felt like it was hyped to be more. We were hoping it would be like Mandy.
Nic cage’s performance was decent enough, but I couldn’t get past it being Nic Cage.
Probably could’ve been a less famous actor.Cazakstan, you might be okay..
I’m terrified of most Horror films, but found it pretty tame. -

Probably not a great bet if you don't do dolls! Without spoiling the film - there are life size dolls in it.
Edit: as steelspeed said, pretty tame otherwise. More of a thriller with horror aspects.

Logan
Thing about Logan is it's actually a decent film, almost a shame it's Marvel. The black and white version was a nice watch.

Yes! the B&W was great.
Logan was a far cry from the MCU being churned out.
Another good film with the B&W make over was Fury Road, worth checking out if you've not seen it (or if you have, rewatch, it holds up)

Thanks for fair warning about the dolls.
I went to a circus as a kid and met the creepy clowns after and they fucked me up.
Never watched It, or Chucky or Poltergeist.

Thought Longlegs was great. Liked the way it was shot and the overall feel of it. Wouldn't say it's scary at all tbh.

The mum definitely had the Mum from Carrie kind of vibe
-
• #21141
Ah yeah, maybe not one for you then! I think we have fairly similar taste in films and I enjoyed it but find dolls and clowns pretty innocuous. It's definitely not an interesting enough film to take the risk on.

Saw Dawson City, frozen time again tonight. Even better the second time around, mesmerising, moving, informative. You'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll change your life.
Tuesday also saw us at the Prince Charles for T's favourite and one of mine... Harold and Maude, another one that gets better every time.
And did I could mention that I went to a Brian De Palma all nighter? Carrie, breakfast of champions.

Started watching 'The Killer'. Fassbender/Fincher sounded like a good combo.
The shameless McDonald's advert at the start was a warning, gave up after 36 minutes. Absolutely terrible.
Any recommendations for hidden gems on netflix?

An entire soundtrack made up of The Smiths as well. Dreadful.

Pearl and Maxxxine double bill today, wouldn't been good to rewatch X in between too for the whole trilogy. All great films and Mia Goth is very good.

Have you watched uncut gems? People might be put off because of Adam Sandler, it's amazing. Then go find Good Time with Robert pattinson, sane directors.

Only the river flows: Chinese Noir about a police detective that gets conflicted when the obvious suspect may not be the killer.
There are some surreal elements, it looks stunning and is well acted and paced. I am not sure about how the surreal elements hang together, in classic David Lynch/Silent Hill 2 the game you really wonder what is going on as it's all interlaced in a way that makes you think, here not entirely sure if it worked or not. Worth a watch.
Not entirely sure it gets the mood of the story it is based on, but I have not read it.
Apart from the colour palette and sense of unease/dread (before it all went Scooby Doo) I thought Longlegs was pretty dire. Anyone seen it? The dialogue was abysmal and WTF was Cage doing? Joker? And soooo many jump cut huge bass notes. Nah.
