If you introduce weight classes, what will you do about the tiny Africans winning all the distance running?
-
• #778
most events suit a particular body type, both track and field
Olympics is there to celebrate the intersection of freakishly dedicated, freakishly talented and freakishly well suited to the sport -

It does seem contradictory that there are classes for weight lifting though. Just googled the height of the American who won bronze in the Men's 61kg - 5'4". Somewhat farcical.
Maybe diving should have minimum weight categories, give the 100+kg lads a chance at a medal.

Simple: Open class, and weight bandings for all others.
-
• #781
Yep, Boxing, Judo, Taekwondo, possibly others have weight classes. Just through historical precedent?

meh. I'm not bothered about the fastest >100kg person to run a marathon, or <50kg person chucking a shot
personally, I enjoy seeing, at the very elite end, what people that are uniquely suited to a discipline can achieveI say this as someone that does a lot of sport and, on my very best day, shows absolutely nothing that could be construed as talent. I'm also not saying only small people should run and only big people should throw. I'm just saying I enjoy seeing the extremes
historical precedent
I assume so. I know it's not exactly consistent

Brilliant run by Emile Cairess in the marathon, a stunning 4th place.
A brilliant course too, unlike London who did just laps if memory services me correctly, the route follows the route of the women’s march on Versailles in 1789. Two brutal climbs and luckily the finish line was perfectly in front of the Hotel des Invalides. There will be some stunning shots of the winner, Tola, crossing the finish line. -

He didn’t win because “the favourite fell off the wall”. The won because he didn’t fall off the wall. FFS

Australian breaker is something special, she really has her shit locked down.
Has to be the defining moment of Paris 2024
Desire, passion, skill and dedication to the sport.
A compelling exhibition of Olympic spirit that will never be forgotten. -

Handball is pretty entertaining, no idea what's going on though.

It must be, I couldn’t watch it all as too much of a car crash.

At the velodrome tonight, it's toasty.

How does the Madison work? So much going on.

It’s almost impossible to follow on the telly, it’s much easier ITL as you know which part of the track you are looking at all the time.

The Dutch to be relegated following that very dangerous crash into GB rider?

That Spanish crash was nasty

Especially if you’re watching it on French TV. So many idioms that I just don’t understand.

Brilliant ride by Portugal

It looked deliberate! Mind you I haven't got a clue what is going on in this race, I cannot follow it at all.

A bit late but save this for next time.
I thought it was a fantastic race, shame the Italians crashed but great job by them and Portugal.

Why are Field events not classified by weight?
Shot put, Hammer, Discus are limited to countries that can support freakishly large competitors.
