Maybe I could get their government to treat it as such :)

If you get a Spanish passport then you lose the UK one.
really?

• #1004
really?
Why do I read this in a positive tone? 😂

Yes so they say, which is a ball ache, but do you really loose it though? No. They can't take away my UK citizenship. I should check if they want me to turn over the passport.
Anyway, I figure I could always reclaim my UK one if I needed.
Personally I don't plan to return to the UK ever, I don't have connections left. So why would I want a UK passport. A spanish one that lets me work and travel around EU, and the world is more valuable I think.
I also might change my mind when the tile comes that it's possible. But hey ho

I could probably get a Malaysian passport, but they don't allow people to hold dual nationality.
-
• #1007
What’s the state U.K. pension status if you become Spanish?
that was the main reason my partner has dual nationality as while having indefinite leave to remain she would not have access to 30 years of state pension contributions without being a dual national. -
• #1008
Fair enough, we won’t be returning to the uk, but we also won’t be working in other countries.
-
• #1009
I'm not sure I should find out. I'm paying taxes here so I'd hope I get something. I'm not sure what happens with the UK either for me.
@stevep yeah it's complicated. Would be a lot simpler if I could have duel. Made worse by our son being born here, always living here, but having a ul.passport. He could have a Spanish one, and I think he should, but then travelling with him might be difficult at border control until hes older.

duel
Fight me!

I'm pretty sure it's a box ticking exercise, as in do you renounce your other citizenship yes or no. Not that they ask for an official document. Then you're just classed as Spanish and nothing else in Spain.
Personally I don't plan to return to the UK ever, I don't have connections left.
This makes it's easier, I'd just apply and then make the decision then. But I know an old couple, friends of my mum that have both passports.

Definitely what I was thinking of when I wrote that.
I'm not into all that posh shit, but food is food right? :)
-
• #1014
Thanks. Good to know.
I'd imagine you only get issues if travelling using both of them, and there's no need for that. Faster with the EU one!

What’s the state U.K. pension status if you become Spanish?
Separate to Spain, but a lot of UK banks are now 'managing their risk' of financial crime by closing down the accounts of anyone who is using their account just to receive their pension payments and is now living in a 'high-risk' country. This means tens of thousands of people who worked here most of their careers and retired to places like Jamaica, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines etc are now being denied access to their own pensions as other banks won't take on the 'risk' i.e. don't see the value on making reasoned assessments on each case on accounts which aren't profitable - it's easier to just fuck the customer off.
This would be a scandal we'd hear much more about if the victims weren't from Jamaica, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines etc...

Are you sure? That would be very unusual. I recently had to prove I didn't have Czech citizenship anymore when I applied for my UK passport. I was lucky that my dad still
had the document from 1991 so I could get it translated.
It would be strange if Spain had a strict citizenship law but no method of checking it. -
• #1017
They might have tightened it I don't know, I'm not saying take my word as the law but I know for a fact my mum's friends have both, I've seen them.
-
• #1018
They will be crying to the Guardian in a couple of years when it comes out and they have lost
some rights etc. -
• #1019
Def used to be the case but I'm pretty sure that changed quite recently.
Edit - seems I’m mistaken and they’re still single passport!
-
• #1020
both Spain and UK allow dual citizenship no? what is the point of forfeiting UK passport?
-
• #1021
I did say no, now I’m not so sure.
-
• #1023
There is a difference between dual nationality and citizenship.
so it appears you can be a dual citizen of Spain and another country but not hold dual English/Spanish nationality. (do not base big life decisions on this post!) -
• #1024
That's not always the case. Flying over for El Piri (I think it was) the EU queue was rammed so we both went to the Scum queue. Mostly you're right though which is why I follow the missus through the EU line. :)

Yeah, but single spirit measures are 40ml so...
Not being funny here, but why? You’ve got full residency rights in Spain, and a UK passport. If you get a Spanish passport then you lose the UK one. The only advantage I can see is that it’s easier to settle in another EU county (or ex Spanish colony) if you decide you want to.
