Magistrates can only jail people for a maximum of 6 months. Crown courts can issue longer sentences, but can't deal with minor offenders quickly. The worst offenders have been remanded in custody with court dates later this month, i.e. like these:

Sme of the Southport rioters have just been through the courts and one got three years and another thirty months.

just stop oil protesters must be well pissed off, they might aswell set fire to a few cars and throw bricks at some posh twats helicopter and hope for a lesser sentence
