Should be fine then if it’s concrete. not used this guy but he did price a job up for a bathroom which was a detailed and reasonable quote, would use him if i needed stuff done.
he’s Croydon way.

I used Joaquim - think I recommended him on here a few years back - and know 2 or 3 other people who have happily used him. He's very good, lovely to have around and work with and very reasonably priced. All I would say is, if you're a 40k kitchen perfectionist who wants every tile aligning with the ley lines and local chakras, he's probably not your guy. If you want a good job at a good price and can live with some slightly rough edges, I'd not hesitate to recommend him.

Cladding finally going on. There's light at the end of the tunnel: seven full months into work now.

Great stuff, lovely feeling when it all comes together at the end. What plans do you have for the outside space?
-
• #11181
We've got a couple of semi-comfy wooden chairs for one side, a cafe table and chairs for the other, a water butt/planter and about two dozen various pot plants. Hope to make it a little jungle-cosy once the plants get mature.

Ah, such a good feeling! Not long now.

Also started on the benches myself. One very long Sunday deep into the project so far.

help me decide on what's a good way to arrange potential shelves
I want a few wooden shelves with LED rebated into the underside. There'll be room for a Sonos somewhere, maybe a few cooking books etc.
Are the blue lines optimal? I feel like 3 would be cramped...

I think they will get greasy there from cooking, I personally wouldnt put books next too.

Agree with konastab, I wouldn't put them next to the hob (and if you did I think the bottom shelf looks too low).

I'm not wedded to books necessarily. I want a space for there for a few items, that's all. Also some task lighting for underneath the shelf

Box in the hood then run a shelf all the way across the top for all the books lining up with the top of the cabinets which all need adjusting slightly, then a shelf that lines up with the bottom of the boxed in extractor and maybe one in the middle of the two.

Not sure about this. I wanted this wall reasonably free from cabinets and boxing in feels like approaching a cabinet...
One long shelf along the top could work though. I'll maybe decide once the kitchen is in.
Builders arrived today so the next 6+ weeks should be fun

is the graphic correct that there will be heigh above the top of the extractor and cupboards, or will these be at ceiling height?
-
• #11191
ceilings are approx 310cm high so yes, there will be height above it.
-
• #11192
Could you move the hood higher up and have more room for shelving?
-
• #11193
it will need to be a bit higher anyway. I'm 198cm and too many times in life have i hit my temple off the corner of a cooker hood...

Get an angled cooker hood. I can't see what I'm cooking currently, but I checked and our sis at manufacture height.

Already got a pretty good Neff model. The hob will be higher than standard too as I'm speccing my worktop above the usual height.
The room will also have a pretty good extractor fan so between the hood and extract it should keep the room pretty smell/grease free.

Moving on to kitchen lighting
We have pretty much a blank canvas here as we're getting the room rewired/plastered etc
The cabinets on the right of the room will have LED strips, as will the shelving and the cooker hood (green shapes)
I'll also have 3 pendant lights hanging over the island (red circles) - something maybe like this There will also be a ton of natural light during daylight hours from south facing windows
I haven't decided about ambient lighting. Recessed spotlights feel a bit soulless and also risk creating unwelcome shadows. I am leaning towards maybe 2 of these in the blue circled areas https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/nymane-ceiling-spotlight-with-3-spots-white-00336267/
I'd both pendants and ambient ceiling lights to be dimmable too.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

The heights for hoods are the minimum install height. You can place them waaaay higher than that.
-
• #11198
Oh really, let me go check but that's a dumb mistake if so.
-
• #11199
there is no max height but min height is like 700mm

Doh. Goes to hit my head on cooker hood in shame.
Went away for a few days whilst the builders knocked through. Feels massive!
