  • Thanks folks. Let me know if you have that freehub @Sam, thanks.

  • Yeh make sure its a Campagnolo freehub though because some of them on these models are specific to them... Remember taking some scirocco and shamal ultras apart and finding them funny.

  • How then hell do I replace the gear cable for the front derailleur on a 12 speed lever? I can't get the cable threaded through the lever at all.

  • New cable, or does it have a cut end?

Try putting a slight bend right near the end, and twirling the cable as you push it against the obstruction (in the direction that won't unwind it if the end is cut).

  • I managed it in the end. Brand new cable with a sealed end helped a lot. I used a bit of brute force and some finessing of the angles to get it through the tiny hole at the lever. The rest of it was easy!

  • Does anyone have any experience setting up these tt shifters ? They are a 10s indexed version but I can't seem to get all the gears.
If I index it to smallest cog upwards then I can't get the ninth click (at 90°) and if I then adjust things to get that ninth click, then I loose the first two...

Does any of that make sense ?
Basically I can't get the last click on the levers, bear in mind everything is 10s
Am I perhaps a tad too short on the loop at the rear derailleur?

    Any ideas welcome !

  • Apologies for my tardiness @mi7rennie

I dug out the freehub earlier but it doesn’t have any bearings in it. You’re welcome to it, but it would probably be easier (and cheaper) getting a complete one from somewhere else.

  • I had similar issues when I first got my shifters @ArthurDent, trouble is that was 14 years ago and I can’t remember what I had to do to fix it, it it’s definitely fixable. I do remember finding the answer on the internet (it existed back then) so give a good old Google and hopefully you can find the answer. Good luck 👍🏼

  • Interesting, so at least I'm not totally crazy.
Something to do tomorrow then ! I will post the answer if I find it.

  • I remember that those shifters used to come with a diagram explaining how to sort this, it's possible for the ratchet ring to be in the wrong position.

I can't find it on Campag's website but this site has a good explanation of how to set them up correctly.

Hope this is the right solution for you!

  • Wow thanks for finding that ! Looks very promising.
I remember when I cleaned them a few years ago, I couldn't quite understand if there was a correct way to insert the ring. I just kind of went on feeling having already fixed a bunch of Record briftees that have the same type of rachet ring inside.

After reading that I'm pretty convinced that it holds the solution.

I will take it apart tomorrow and find out !

  • No worries, thanks for looking.

  • @Shump @ArthurDent thanks for this, very timely as I've got some of those campag bar end shifters I'm about to fit to a bike, and having never used bar end shifters before I've got no idea what I'm doing.

A couple of things I'm still not sure on, did these shifters come in indexed and non indexed/friction versions or are they able to do both?

I got a set in a box of parts I bought but neither shifter has any noticeable clicks when moving the lever so I just assumed they were non indexed/friction. I was planning on using them with a 10 speed campag chorus rear derailleur.

Sadly the exploding diagram in shump's link above does not work and I can't find one online, and i find the Campag website bloody terrible for trying to find these diagrams for older spec stuff, so I'm not sure if the ones I have even have all the internal parts they should have, so would be nice to check if anyone has a copy of the exploding diagram for these.

And finally what does the little adjuster knob on the right hand shifter do?

  • I had found the exploded diagram on the web somewhere a while ago, it was on some archive site I think, I will take a look and see if I saved it somewhere.

The little adjuster is another cable tensioner.

I know that there is a 9s and 10s version, and being Campagnolo, it is possible that the first version of the "newer design" are friction as their first tt levers were used until the 90s when they switched to this newer design.

I haven't really looked into when these newer ones were introduced, I wonder if there was a friction version for 8s record in the mid 90s before they added the friction for late 90s a'd 9s record.
Will have to go through old catalogues etc to find out !

  • Thanks a lot Arthur, I'll await your findings with interest:)

Here are the ones I have, on the left hand shifter the silver bit has very faintly '10 speed' etched into it, so I guess that's what they are, assuming internals are as they were originally.

I guess the indexed versions have slightly different internals with a ratchety/indexed bit the friction ones don't have, but have no idea if such parts are still available and if changing a few parts you can change them from friction to indexed and vice versa. I plan to run friction not indexed so hopefully I've already got the friction version and I'm good to go. I am still waiting for the frame though so need that to arrive before I can actually start.

@ArthurDent any more pics of the full bike you're working on there, what is it?

  • Here's an exploded diagram of the 10s levers.
It's from the 2005 Campag spare parts catalogue.

  • Fantastic! Thanks very much :)

  • Thats funny that, I will check if mine hase the same, don't think I've noticed any etching.

By the way my left lever, so front derailleur, is not indexed, just the right one for rear derailleur.
Not sure if you can get the inner parts any more, I couldn't find anything when I looked, even the levers are getting harder to find and often sell quickly if you wanted spares.

What's your frame going to be ?

Mine is a Somec Sirius from 1999-2000, apparently it featured in a magazine at some point as it was imported by the exclusive importer in France, haven't found the magazine yet.

  • Wow excellent, Somec already looks fast. Are those ITM dual bars? And is that a dinner plate size 55t chainring you've got to go on it?

I don't want you curse mine by declaring I've got a bike I don't have yet. I'm already anxious as the tracking info hasn't updated for 2 weeks so hoping it's just customs and parcel force being slow and slack, and am awaiting the 'we.have your frame hostage, pay us extra money now, including extra postage even tho I've paid postage already. #cheekybastards

Hopefully I'll hear something about frame arrival in the next week.

So all I'll say for now is mine is also italian, also yellow and about 5 years older than yours. Seems we've got some similar parts lined up., the shifters, I've got the quill version of the ITM dual bars, I've got a silver groupset with a Record crank that I've got a 55t dinner plate ring for, but the hidden bolt on my crank was stupid tight and the bolt has rounded off. I've tried dremeling in a groove to screwdriver it out but still can't budge it, so am admitting defeat on that and taking yo my LBS to see if they can get it out for me.

I'll post it on the forum when/if frame arrives and I've built it, and will follow progress on your wild Somec. Thanks for the replies.

  • Sounds like a similar and good recipe for a lovely bike ! Look forward to seeing it 👌

I've got a set of Cinelli Angel bars on it, and I converted a pair of non functioning brake levers as tt brakes, although I should buy the real thing some day.
And yes well spotted got a big 55t chainring on there !

Update on the levers, I took them apart and this is what i saw :

So ofcourse following that helpful link and guide, I can tell that the cog wasn't in the correct position, and I think the lever wasn't installed at the right angle on the bars either.
Also to note, there is no stamped "10s" and it has 24 notches, so according to @Shump source my levers are a 9s variant.

This is confusing although good news : I originally wanted this to be a 9s bike as it fits the date of the frame perfectly (1999-2000 last record 9s ti groupset).
Also these 9s shifters are tough as hell to find from what I've seen over the years, and when I bought them the seller did say there were 9s.

So, I'm going to get the 9s cassette and derailleur out and try indexing again in 9s.

One important thing I would say, and I think its also a detail that can be confusing and why I thought I had a 10s set, is that I can go through 8 clicks fine, and if I pull a bit more there is just the smallest of 9th click.
So I guess you could think, like I did, that there is an extra click not working but actually it just the end of the teeth on the cog inside the shifter !

I will post the bike when I've got it together and working again !
Thanks all for the help 👍

You need to hammer a torx bit into it.

  • Question: is an 11speed crankset compatible with 10speed record? A mate wants to get a compact crank, but the 10sp ones are a bit rare. Any suggestions otherwise? Many thanks in advance!

  • Sounds good! Will the 11sp chainrings work as well?

  • Yes. Internal chain width is the same for 10 and 11 speed.
