  • a ‘do as you likey’ is anyone who doesn’t give a toss about their actions.

That's how it can be taken literally. Where did you hear this phrase?

  • From experience, nothing could be kept on site either.

Anything that was left was either stolen or smashed.

  • When back home in Kent whenever antisocial behaviour or just general fuckwittery happens and is discussed by people in the community.
Also it’s been used by people who were born in a caravan, a real one pulled by a pony none of this steel frame aluminium skin nonsense!

  • also a ‘do as you likey’ is anyone who doesn’t give a toss about their actions.

So purely coincidental that it rhymes with another word.

I think you're being a bit niave. But then I didn't realise the word pikey had any connections with Gypsy until I was quite old.

  • Having heard the phrase used by somebody of Roma heritage i’m comfortable using it. they were not referring to a member of the travelling community either.

If Velocio doesn’t like the words he can delete them if he wants to, it’s his forum.

On the contrary, slurs can be allowed if 'context'

  • What is the correct term for travellers that don't travel, or don't move from council sites that are supposed to be temporary. Don't pay council tax nor bills. Trespass on land and leave the site fly tipped with rubbish, trespass on land, steal other people's property, attack police and officials that enter their sites?

Yes this is a topic of what to call a bunch of people who believe they are above the law.

  • A bunch of Lynx’s?

  • As I (hopefully) will be getting a few acres, we had been discussing what else we could be doing with the land. At the moment its set up as two big plots next to each other , one is a house with huge garden and the other a big field. The previous owners have set out all the land fairly sympathetic to nature, lots of general wood areas with mini lumber area, two mini orchard areas, the edges of the property lined with fruit bushes, super generous area built as food production plots.

That still leaves the larger field which has a small entertaining area within but generally is left to wildflower and cut once annually. This is the area that we havent really decided what we shall do with it. So I am keen to investigate alongside you to see whats possible to become a net contributor both to local nature/wildlife but potentially also community.

I also know that the next door fields and chalk pits are owned by an investment firm who would likely be open to selling (they offered to the current owners) and we will likely look at that in order to expand on that initiative.

The plots are in a national landscape (the new name for AONB's) so planning is likely to be a little more complicated but if its altruistic and for community good then parish councils etc can be convinced.

Would be interested to also find out what you discover if you do go further on this and potentially be actively involved too.

Perhaps part of the field to create a safe space for travellers? the law makes it increasingly difficult for them to find a legal place to stay.
The chap I mentioned further up thread who has the woodland for sale tried to sell some land nearby in small plots for travellers but the borough councillors created a right stink and wouldn’t grant planning permission but if it’s for temporary use planning shouldn’t be a problem? wheeled caravans not static should be o.k.

  • Well I think I'll be talking to https://www.protect.earth/ to see if something halfway between doing good for the environment and doing good for local people works.

I still have no clear plans, haven't looked at what to buy and where, and don't yet have any funds to do anything. But if I can bring my mortgage under control, then I'm willing to push some of my disposable income this direction, to save towards this and then acting it on as and when the funds amount to anything. Do it for a while, establish whatever the operating costs are, and then find whatever equilibrium makes most sense.

I think if plans excluded wild camping for a couple of nights, or being open to people to use for picnics and gatherings, then I'd be less interested overall. I want to balance a social benefit that can be seen directly in how it's used, and doing good for the neighbours and environment. My definitions of these are sweepingly broad, all ideas (stupid or not) remain on the table, but it can't be people to the exclusion of nature, or nature to the exclusion of people, because that's what I hope here, to have this as an accessible space for people, but in a good way.

  • this thread continues to be very revealing

  • Yep. And have rewilded it. It’s amazing. For the first couple of years we let neighbouring farmers use it for livestock. But we couldn't understand why it was devoid of invertebrates yet nearby in woodland there were butterfly alleys. Then my wife started working in soil health and we discovered that worming tablets given to livestock leach out into animal faeces, this then kills off invertebrates.

Within a year of stopping the livestock coming here the field became active with invertebrates. The long grasses collapsed and formed a mat full of rodent tunnels. The raptor population exploded, the deer population grew massively and we have about 10 roe deer and 4 or 5 muntjac roaming around. Walking through the field is like being in a nature documentary. Grasshoppers leap around like a firework display around my legs. Various types of dragon fly flutter around, the bat population has increased.

It brings a deep joy every day, seeing nature taking back over. Each year different species are in ascendence, wether it is docks, thistles or wild flowers, hornets or deer. It's a marvel to see how quickly with the removal of major human interference natural processes have taken over.

  • Just to be clear you are making the statement that I via this username *What is the correct term for travellers that don't travel, or don't move from council sites that are supposed to be temporary. Let's be clear.

Edit how do you do italics?

  • As long as there's a fridge.

  • Those terracotta things are brilliant. But I would say use filtered water as the terracotta gets tide marks from hard water and some think it's mould.

  • Wasn't there tax breaks for buying land/woods a while back? Or something that the revenue from the wood/trees is tax free.
So maybe look at something to generate income to cover costs or running and payback what you put in.

  • The raptor population

    Velociraptor???

  • I broke my cardinal vow to never reply to one of your weird rhetorical shit-stirring posts. Let's be clear, it won't happen again!

  • It used to be used for IHT structuring. Idk if it still is.

Goves Agriculture Bill made a lot of changes post Brexit, so it's likely there could be subsidiaries available for rewinding, etc.

  • Really or just wanted to make liabllous statement that could give Velocio and this site issues? As I thought the forum was against this and took steps to make sure it didn't happen.

As for shit stirring, I do have proof of said behaviour in Lambeth, Southwark and Newham. Whilst tresspass/theft on farm land I have proof from Warwickshire, Hereford and Worcester, Shropshire and Essex.

  • It is something that, I think, that needs to be looked at.
