1994 Trek 7000

  • Got this for $180AUD on marketplace. It excellent condition for a 30 year old bike, everything is original.

    Only ever really been a roadie, so a mountain bike like this will be a new experience.

    Thinking 1x9 with new wheels, tan walls, handle bars and needs new cabling and possibly shifters.

  • Cool purchase. I'm not an MTBer (althoug I commute for many years on a Giant ATX) but I much prefer the leaner looks of the old skool stuff. Great project

  • Decided to go 1x7, only going to use it to potter around town

    While the bike hadn't been used much it has rusted over time, quite badly in some places, so just gonna replace the quill stem and handlebars.

    Also decided to get rid of the canti-brakes for the ease of V-Brake.

    Lost a wheel bearing and forgot the order i took off the spacers.

  • to be honest, i reckon these maxxis tyres would make any bike look great.

    It is quite a bit more expensive in australia to source the parts because there is a flat $10 fee for postage, so if you forgot something etc it can run up to quite a bit relative to the value of the whole operation. Also, no LFGSS in melbourne

  • I bought a narrow wide 110bcd ring thinking it would be quick to find a square taper crankset with 110bcd. Not as quick as I hoped. The best i can find is a Claris 2400 crankset (with an octolink BB). Is octolink any good or is it worth persisting to find a ST crankset? I note octolink had a very short production run

    Managed to strip the drive side threads. Fml. Off to the Lbs to have them cut off or similiar tomorrow. Can see the threads beneath the bike. Sob

  • Bike looks great with those tires, indeed!
    Might be stating the obvious here, but for 110BCD, there is the early 90s cranksets (M650 suggested, or M730 XT, or M550 LX, maybe even more in lower tier components). They all used to go with 122,5mm long axle, you would probably be changing the bottom bracket anyway to make it work (current cranset uses IIRC something like 113mm, may work on the outer position, may aswell be hitting the chainstays). Octalink is not great. Possible to go 110BCD with current HT II compact road cranksets, best if you had a way to try if it doesn't hit the chainstays before buying one.

When the mechanic forced off the crank he put a new a bb-un300 with a 122.5 spindle so gives a bit more flexibility and avoids any chain stay rub. it does have an incredibly crude original frame guard you can see in the images. Theyve bolted a hanger thing, then powder coated it and then add like a saw tooth plate to account for the triple chain rings.

    The mechanic remarked it looked like the USA Trek factory was producing components in someones garage.

  • managed to finally find a 1 1/8 quill stem, a bit high but i have plenty of aggressively setup road bikes to generate back pain. Chose not to get an stem adapter because ive got a soft spot for quill stems
