  • What's the use case?

  • As an anxious parent staying in a hot place without air con, I want to keep my kids cool at night so they don't die.

Basically I want one or two fan(a) that will pack in a suitcase (have decent luggage allowance) in case the main fan isn't sufficient to keep my kids cool. I think it'll be fine, but for an easy life I need to find a secondary solution.

USB or rechargeable would be good so we're not constrained by power points.

  • Not sure it fully fits the brief but I recently got one of these. It lasts a few hours on max power but you can usb power it, has a belt clip and stand. Pushes a lot more air than a comparable sized traditional fan

  • hot place...decent luggage allowance

Can you see what the problem is here?

  • Can you see what the problem is here?

Taking heavy bags to countries south of the UK adds more weight to them, pulling them further down the map, thus making them hotter?

  • How hot is too hot? As an example, the kids in Valencia, Spain often sleep in the (very) high 20s in their apartments and at school and it is considered normal; ours (2.5y) only really struggles if it hits thirty.

Also, instead of lots of fans, just freeze a tupperware filled with water and put it in front of the one fan pointing over the cot/bed. Works surprisingly well and lasts over the hottest part of the night.

  • You don’t understand Potential Energy….. moving bags further down south the potential energy converts to kinetic energy then to heat as you stop, making the bags warmer

  • Although if your child is like me, sleeping with a fan on and no covers is likely to result in a sore throat the following morning. A thin cotton sheet helps with that.

  • You can easily get these off Amazon/eBay, runs off a phone charger.

Slight larger than a CPU cooling fan, won't be surprised if they are just being repurposed.

  • I have stuff I need to organise in my 1st floor flat and loft. Trying to nibble away at the elephant eventually results in overload, with too many related and semi-related tasks springing up for my ADD addled brain to handle alone. It’s causing me a lot of stress, I don’t have family or friends who can help, what category of worker do I need to contact for a literal helping pair of hands?

  • Google "declutter help" I have someone visit once a month for 2hrs, it is pricey but progresses things.

  • I guess 30° - 26°. It'll be fine Imo. But anything for an easy life. We've got one cool mat recommended by a hot friend (still waiting on the 2nd one the seller forgot to send).

    I've bought this:

    2.3kg (which seems a lot) 7x15x14cm
    and will report back.

  • Sign up to tinder? I managed an amazing amount of tidying when someone was due to come round.

  • But then I made a mess even more quickly.

  • Thanks @rhb, that looks just the ticket.

@snottyotter I’m happily committed so thankfully no need for online dating. I don’t keep an untidy shared space, unless I’m trying to organise my personal space in which case it tends to spill over. Adding to the challenge is that it’s a lot of small tasks that take a lot of time and concentration to complete, and my staging area is limited because it’s also a shared area.

  • I feel for you. To tidy up a mess first you have to make things even messier. This is the point I normally give up. Thank Cheeses Liz is tidy and good at helping me to sort out stuff, even if that’s only showing there is light at the end of the tunnel.
My top tip is find a small area of proper mess, straighten it up, then once it’s straight and only when it looks tidy pull out the rubbish and throw it away. You have just made the first step and you now have a small space to put things that you are keeping as you tidy and throw away more. Ever just a few cm of clear space is enough to show progress. That’s usually enough to keep me interested for a while.
    Good luck.

  • my staging area is limited because it’s also a shared area.

Self storage (Big Yellow etc.) can be a help, but beware of the pitfalls.

  • I like the tidy up chat.
I can get to a certain level of tidy looking, but so much shit is lurking everywhere.
Also do the start, make a mess, manage a fraction and then bung everything back into drawers.
Which we now have a lot of. Unfortunately we also have a lot of stuff to put into them.

  • Bike stolen today. Don't have it insured or on contents insurance.
Anyone know of online bike shops with any good sales at the moment?

    Cheers

  • Aw man sorry to hear

  • This takes me back to our holidays to Menorca when my boys were small. We used to rent an apartment with no air-con but in school summer hols (so roasting hot).

We bought some small fans that had a large spring clip that would attach to the bedside table. They were probably 200-250mm día.

They were mains powered, pretty loud but once the kids were asleep they were asleep!

I still have them and could post at cost if you are interested. I think I have three of them

  • bastards! Sorry mate. What bike was it? was it a run around or fancy? Forum has collectively built many a bike.
