  • Poor Abdullah. Getting a puncture in lightly-populated areas when your spares have run out is no fun.

  • Absolutely.

In 2022 I passed a guy 200km from the finish who was up against the crash barrier on a busy road in baking sun in Bulgaria, with his wheel out. He flagged me down and asked for a tube. He said his tubeless had gone, he hadn't been able to fix his punctures and was out of tubes, and had been stuck in that spot for two hours, trying to re-set up his tubeless, with obviously no compressor and probably no sealant.

It was clear his head had gone. I took pity on him and gave him a tube. Otherwise the poor fucker would probably still be there!

I know when I have had mechanicals on TCR, the adrenaline surge can be really powerful and hard to manage. I was once fixing something in a town in Austria and a guy came up to ask if I was ok as he could see that I was shaking. I was fine, just panicking about losing time. All you want is to just get going and get a decent rhythm
