Not sure if it's quite what you want but in the phone app settings you can block "calls from unidentified numbers" which should catch most things?

My own question, any app recommendations for:
Simple layout of 2D geometric shapes (basically I want to make a cutting plan for a couple of sheets of plywood to try and optimise as much as possible
Barebones 3D modeling - potentially to mock up the above

How do I get gmail to ask for my fingerprint before opening? Given the widely reported instances of phones being nicked and then banking passwords, etc being changed because they have access to email it seems like an obvious step to be able to protect it with a pin or fingerprint or whatever.

If your phone was nicked why not find another machine and sign out on all devices?
I guess I'd rather do that than make mail harder to access.

It does mean you need access to another machine pretty quick but probably still viable.

If you want to go down this route, would you not be better served by token based log in (I believe Velocio talks about it occasionally)

I can only block unidentified numbers. Suggestions?

I'd need to go through 2FA to be able to sign out of all devices, and obviously my primary device for 2FA would be the stolen phone. So realistically I wouldn't be able to do that until I got home which could be a while.
@branwen erm, maybe? I tried googling token based login gmail but that didn't throw much up.
Password manager and 2FA apps both have biometrics to open and that's fine for me. Would just like the same with gmail.

But yes, it's a bit more involved than just biometrics

Ah, I already have that. That stops people logging into my email using a different device but my concern is my phone which has already been authorised (and I don't want to go as extreme as having to fully log into my email each time).

You used to be able to generate some access codes if you lost your phone/2FA device. Is this still a thing? I used to have a set in my cycling wallet for ultras but I've not had to use them.
Another option is shared MFA device, ie. if you use Authy, you can have a backup of it on a second device (partner's or spare phone).

I think so but then I'd need to carry the codes round. I have 2FA on another device but if my phone gets nicked it could be a while before I get home to get my hands on that. 2FA on girlfriend's phone and hope I'm with her I suppose.
Just seems so obvious to have an option to protect email.

I dunno, seems like a bit of an extreme edge case to me that I'm going to be ok not implementing a solution for.
Have you tried changing your bank account password?
I don't think my bank even uses my email to login. I don't know what's required for a reset. Can you call the bank and get a hold put on an account like you would a stolen credit card?
-
• #22964
AppLock will do this, I used it a while ago for similar reasons. I believe Samsung phones have a built in way to do this, maybe other manufacturers too

I am a bit confused about the risk vector in question here.
Is the concern that your phone (that is presumably set up with biometric security to use) is stolen whilst you are using it and the thief then uses it in its unlocked state to access your email and reset passwords to Amazon or whatever, or somehow access your bank?
I suppose that is a valid concern, but is quite a rare happenstance, isn't it, that it gets nicked from your hand whilst unlocked?
If that happens then they have access directly to your Monzo and Amazon account anyway.
But they would have to nick it and keep it unlocked whilst evading capture, right? So are we talking about a ride by on a moped with a pillion passenger who grabs it and keeps the phone alive?
All seems very unlikely to me.
Perhaps setting a stupidly short screen lock timeout is what you need?

Sorry to burst your bubble but this is very prevalent at the moment in London, the most likely scenario of getting your phone nicked tbh

I think this is more done so that they can use Apple/Google pay.
Agreed it's an edge case but all my banking apps, password manager, 2FA app, etc require a fingerprint/password. Seems surprising that it isn't an option for gmail.
Edit: Looks like it is an option on Outlook, just not Gmail app.

A friend dropped her bank card the other day and cunts were using it immediately for contactless stuff.
I don't use NFC on my phone so that wouldn't work. My phone and banking apps have fingerprint access requirements so they're not much use. In the unlikely event it was grabbed while unlocked I could use my partner's/mate's/cops/random's phone to log out of everything and/or adjust 2FA so they lose access to email.
I dunno, I'm still not seeing enough risk to make accessing my gmail harder on a daily basis.
If everyone didn't have stupid big phones they wouldn't feel the need to take them out of pockets and leave on tables in pubs and shit.

But what's the point of having a smartphone unless you're constantly on it?

I'm old enough that I remember how to have friends and talk or look around.
I mostly use my phone as 2FA while sat at home or mapping when I'm hammered and wake up in a random place in England.

Not sure if this is old or new news or applies to all Android phones but with newer Samsung phones if you put the camera in selfie mode and then hold up your palm to the camera it will start a short countdown then take the pic without you needing to push a button.

Banned for Ageism.
Wait, how old are boomers?

It's old news. It works on Pixel 6a so presume it's and Android camera feature as stock.
App that blocks all incoming calls that aren't in my contact list?
