Spaying female dogs if you’re not planning on breeding them does have benefits - it’s a reasonably significant reduction in cancer risk.
We are still in 2 minds about permanently castrating our Otto. He’s had the 6 month chemical implant, which has improved some behaviours (he’s more food driven now so easier to train, he’s less aggressive with other entire males, he’s being targeted less by entire males). But we have seen some other behaviours - he seems more clingy to my partner, and more frustrated on some walks. It’s been good to trial though, albeit expensive.
Photo from last months race - 29.4mph clocked

I was told that spaying can increase the chance of other more common cancers though. I haven't done any research into this though so maybe it's not true.
Also, beautiful fast dog :)

Gen X is the cool one, right?

Ooh, I have a fastboi, what's this racing you speak of? Looks like fun!

The ones we go to are breed-specific and arranged by a group of breeders, but they’re usually at a whippet racing track. We are Bristol based so we sometimes go to the Taunton track, but last month was the annual Silken Windhound show so we did it near where the show was (near Maidstone).
Not sure what flavour of fastboi you have but you might be able to find a whippet racing club that will help!

Ah fair enough, thanks for intel. I have a lurcher x deerhound. On reflection I'm not convinced he'd take to it, much more likely to run over and start saying hello to his competition. Will have a half-hearted look into it and then never follow it up....

Hmm, interesting discussion (neutering/spaying) thanks.
I’m very conflict averse so wouldn’t give grief to the owners of any bitches in heat but it feels like the responsible thing to do.
If it looks like having our dog spayed will prevent him drawing the attention of other complete males then I’ll be all for it, but not until he’s out of his teens.

My problem is with dog owners that reckon only female dogs should be neutered.

My Battersea(Windsor) dachshund was supposed to have been castrated, at 12 months old, back in January as per the contract I signed with them. I think this is a blanket neutering requirement or any Battersea puppy but my local vet raised an objection to 12 months. They suggested 24 months was far better for dachshunds as testosterone builds muscles and strengthens their back. Battersea were happy with this and will still pay for the procedure with their vet. I think the delay is suggested for females too, again to help strengthen their backs. I think, in general, females should be spayed at 4-5 months old and then the chances of breast cancer are greatly reduced.

Advice is 1-2 seasons for female dogs. Growth plates, bone density etc

much more likely to run over and start saying hello to his competition
I can't really imagine him engaging in any goofy behaviour like that. :)

I had my first negative interaction today.
Off lead intact lab comes round the corner with a dog and owner. But this owner didn’t own the lab.
Lab is being sniffy, next dog owner come round, not their lab. So I hold the lab by its collar and ask who’s dog it is: and the guy behind them starts shouting for me to get off his dog, you don’t touch another persons dog, and waves his finger in my face.
Should I have held his dog or not?
And why. -

I lean towards “I don’t know who’s fucking off lead dog this is and I don’t want any fucking going on thanks”

Keeping with the dogs on holiday vibes. Spending a few nights at a cottage on Loch Fyne. Lochan the boarder terrier is living her best life.
