Well, that went better than expected. It took three goes, because my soldering skills were shit when I was 14 and unsurprisingly they're no better now, but it came back to life and worked flawlessly round Peaslake today.
I ended up with a bag of 100 spring pins, so if anyone finds themselves in need of one then let me know as I'm unlikely to use up the remaining 99 of them
