  • I haz a dog innit.

  • Masda 6 comes in estate.

Honda crv seem to pop up with 250k milage ads, which sounds pretty soild. Dred to think what a German car with that milage would look like.

  • How long so you want the car for?

How good are you at doing your own repairs?

  • At least a year
    I don’t do mechanicing
Ideally car is s daily back and forth from home to Lewisham (7km) and then occasionally motorway / dream is France

  • That Avensis is only just run in. Lot of (sensible) car for the money

  • This isn't a proper dealer with a showroom or even a car lot (I'm in Birmingham, I know where this says it is). It's just some space behind some shops.

  • From browsing different options I think a private seller Avensis is probably the way to go.

I think you need more money for the big Hondas and Masda 6. Could just be the cheap ones I skimmed, but once you started digging though the mot history they seemed like dogs with big bills on the horizon.

  • Want someone to go along with you and poke the car?

  • Yeah looked up the postcode.

  • I disagree, read the seller look at the car.

Wear and tear what it looks like.

  • Muffler recommendations for my turbo Forester please. The stock muffler is on the way out, I'd like a little more growl but don't want to annoy the neighbours too much. It's very, very polite at the moment. Extra horsepower or improved fuel efficiency would not be a bad thing, obvs.

I'm a total no0b at this stuff. Resonator? Performance muffler? Please school me, what do I need to know?

  • A few from FOTU yesterday.

  • Back in the days when I had an Impreza, Haywood and Scott seemed to be the thing for quality and not too loud. But not sure if they would ship nor your actual spec of vehicle. What brands are available there?

  • I'm sure there's heaps more options than I had for my Saab but after weighing up the pros and cons of a performance system I opted for a stock spec muffler in stainless. Definitely a bit more growl without being too noisy at low speeds or boomy on the motorway.

    Otherwise HKS for Japanese stuff.

  • Based entirely on watching MCM there may be somewhere that will make a custom setup for you that you can chat with them about - so, noise, performance and so on can be agreed along with price before they get cracking.

  • I think I’ve got someone, friends partner just piped up - he’s a mechanic….

  • Maaate, 4" straight thru and a canon on the back.

  • Does the stainless do anything different apart from not rust as quickly? I'm not gonna go full exhaust, it's just the muffler that needs replacing.

  • Rusts slower, looks prettier, costs more.

  • You can get away with mild steel here. If you do decent kilometers then condensed water won't build up an rust. Although, how far from the ocean are you?

Find a local exhaust shop and just get a new performance muffler fitted. Just make it clear you don't want loud or any drone at cruise speeds. You won't see any gains unless you go from the dump pipe back.

  • I'm 700m from Moreton Bay. 🐬

I'm planning to hit up Toy's Mufflers down the road from me, they've got a great rep. That's great advice, thanks!

@efb I'm gonna go cheap and cheerful for now. A full custom exhaust would be lovely but a bit extravagant and not at all necessary. Current job queue is muffler > blow off valve > wheels/tyres > paint correction > coilovers/airbags.

  • Not that I think you're after the last word in performance, but if you might go for a full system in future it would be wise to let them know - they can make the end section so that it would match up to a downpipe and mid pipe section in (say) 3".

  • How did the viewing go?

  • Rust, looks and noise. I just replaced the muffler and feel it improved the noise but no obvious performance gains. It was used so similar price as new mild steel unit.
