for 16 years i've been uploading photos to my computer via the microsoft app PHOTOS

recently i've been unable to do this, does anyone know if changes have been made to the app do i need to upgrade ? add the latest version or something ?
my usual procedure was connect camera via usb switch it on. photos automatically opens and you click select all and download ? it then saves the images to my pictures this pc folder ? this no longer works ?

or

can anyone suggest a free app for getting photos out of the camera onto my pc ?

Can you not just access the camera through file explorer, as you would with a USB drive for example?
