  • Yeah, more than one way to skina cat, do you want the 'you could have done it like this' thing (as that can go on & on) - are you really feeling you can't make it work for you

  • think im mostly trying to figure out how to style the frames out to not stick out like a sore thumb so much

    edit; finished product

  • I don't think the chaps done it like that to be a knob (there'll be tolerances and hidden practical reasons), but over that they should easily be able to explain these, I just hope the immediate inconveniences become the 'where on earth would we put it without that being like that' thing

  • Once it's full of records the frame won't stick out (I think it looks fine)

  • Sure but the ability to mount the controls remote from the pipework and thermostatic valve with control by wire is a really good idea.

  • Fuck those prices, it's cheaper just to break and retile the wall if something goes wrong.
Regular old concealed shower it is.

    Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

  • If you wanted more depth than the recesses offered this seems a good solution.
Just having the shelves protruding would have been strange I think, and joining the boards in the middle way harder/more expensive.
As you asked about styling, don't think it really works with the half painted walls, sorry. White walls, red (or other colour) shelves could look quite awesome and modern.
Or keep the walls, and paint shelves red too, maybe.

  • Or the wall with shelves and shelves in one colour, rest white. The red looks like a great choice, btw, just not sure about how it's used.

  • The paint job was done years ago, and kind of agree its not working, planning to give the whole room a freshen up.

The shelving also needs sanding and oiling, or painting guess, maybe a combination.

Glad everyone thinks the job seems a decent solution, guess i was overthinking it

  • My guess would be that if the shelves had been fitted with supports flush to the walls, they would have needed additional support across the front which would have reduced the height available, compared to how they are now

  • I agree with the other comments, they look fine, little to be gained by doing it the other way and practically better the way it's been done.

I would get some uprights to support the shelves if you are keeping vinyl on them. Doesn't need to be fixed in place, just as long as it connects to the floor for weight bearing, so the shelves would need packing out under the centre there. Or at least have a back on the shelves that helps to support the shelf. It will be a lot of weight.

  • .

  • very split opinions, all my mates think it looks shit 😂

anyway ill do some filling out.

next question, he said do just oil it straight on top without sanding, but theres still pencil marks and stuff from transport so i kind of want to sand it.. is that super dangerous with this kind of ply?

the woods going to be on show, it wasnt planned to be painted but now im really feeling this kind of ply isnt meant to be on show?

  • they do need some sort of architrave edging to mount/ bridge them to the wall.. bet a classic kids rubber will remove the pencil

  • It's hardwood ply so can look ok, but personally I'd paint it. If I was doing an oiled finished I would sand it all before assembly.

  • and it should be safe to sand?

  • Safe? Yeah of course, just wear a mask.

  • Hand or random orbital 120 or 180g, as blue says rub off the pencil marks with a rubber first, much easier than trying to sand them off.

  • Wait, has he lined the alcoves with ply and THEN built the shelves/unit inside that? If that's the case it does seem weird.

I don't mind the whole unit protruding out the alcove, def think it would be better than having just the shelves sticking out. With the gap between the protruding section and wall/ply lining plastered or filled so it's flush with the ply, it would look nice and clean.

  • He removed the original door frame and then framed out the space just with timber, not ply, then slid in the ‘bookcases’

Yeah i think with some filling, and painting of the framing, then either painting of sanding and oiling the book cSe itll look fine in the end

  • Busy few days. got the ceiling insulated and sealed and then got all the plasterboard up barring a couple of trim pieces i just did not have the energy to finish off today.

got a couple of days of filling and sanding ahead of me then i can start priming stuff.

feeling really proud of the progress i'm making so far.

if anyone knows of a good source for affordable (cheap) lengths of trim there are areas around the window and entry door that will need some kind of trim to finish the edges off as they're all a bit mad looking because the bloke who built the summerhouse never met a corner he wouldn't cut apparently.

  • correx!! you a fkin pro

  • The stuff on the floor? Nah its the old underlay. I sliced it to bits cutting the insulation to size but will keep it until the painting is done. Got some new underlay and laminate ready to go down when the walls are done.

  • It's done the same job, all clean and tidy
