  • Is this a baby rat or a mouse?

I’m not letting it in either way, but would be good to know.

  • That’s a young rat.

Unless I’m getting the scale all wrong, mice don’t grow that big (a mouse could crawl into that hose).

  • That was my fear. I reckon it’s about 4-5cm long, but really young/dopey. Didn’t seem to notice we were there.

  • The face looks too short and round to be a rat. I'd bet it's a field mouse.

  • Ostalgie anyone?

Of course not. It obviously doesn't follow from what I wrote.

It's true that Kohl/Schröder/Merkel were all massive crooks even by the standards of German politicians, but do you really think East Germany would have done better as separate nation? AfD support in the East is at about the same level as NSDAP support nationwide in 1933🙂

The high level of 'support' for the "AfD" in the East is a combination of several factors, not the least of which are the disastrous policies imposed on the East through the rushed 'reunification'. Their economy was sold out from under them without people being given any meaningful say, and it led to decades of deprivation. People are still immensely, and rightfully, aggrieved about what happened, and Putin-financed and -directed propaganda obviously exploits these vulnerabilities. Perfectly viable different timescales for reunification were put forward at the time, but Kohl wanted to rush it because had there been another election in West Germany only, he would probably have been voted out of office. He only won in 1990 because enough people in the East believed his lies about "blühende Landschaften" ('flowering lands'). That's not to blame those who were obviously desperate to see the back of the GDR dictatorship, but they didn't realise what a dishonest corruptocracy they ended up trusting.

  • Seconded. I've just spent the best part of 5 months ridding my place of mice and none of them came close in size to that fellah.
ETA - A mouse will fit through an ~8mmØ hole - that's the size of a ciggy or a pencil.

  • I think it's a young house mouse. They can get up to 9 cm long and a similar length of tail.

That doesn't look like a rat body to me, but I think the biggest hint is it's a hairy tail, not a "naked" one.

  • I agree, the tail is a giveaway.

  • I asked our residents expert Dolly and it’s definitely food.

  • I find this style is more comfortable than the ones that collapse into more of a cylindrical shape - they tend to dig into the outside of my thighs after a while. They do fold down flat, but an overall compromise on transport space.

  • Foxy tower airing rack and meaco 12l dehumidifier ordered.

Next I need to move the door from in swing to out swing and then get a plumber in to remove the toilet and cap the pipes.

Chisel and pneumatic lifters are due today so I can do the door. A carpenter friend told me the pneumatic lifters are a game changer when doing doors singlehanded.

  • If the waste is from the floor (rather than wall), make sure the plumber doesn’t leave too much pipe showing above your desired finished floor level.

We removed a toilet and sink to make a bike room and only just got away with how much waste pipe was left and capped - underlay just made up the difference.

  • I’m drawing a total blank on this. I’ve got a mystery beep/chirp when my car (Nissan Serena) is powered off. I’m assuming it’s battery related as the other day my kids left internal lights on, draining the battery and necessitating be starting it with a mates vans battery (I then charged it with a mains charger and drove for about 45 mins). It’s been chirping since then - only when off. As soon as you turn the power on it stops.

Any ideas? I’m getting nothing from either Nissan-specific forums or car forums in general.

  • Thank you, rodent identifiers. Looks like we have mice as well as rats to deal with then.

  • Loose battery connection perhaps? Probably worth taking it out and putting it back in again and seeing if that solves it. The old turn it off and on again!

  • Thankfully the toilet waste goes through the wall so can be capped off there (I hope, as I am not a plumber).

Annoyingly I think the dehumidifier water drain will be just too low to go out of the cistern overflow pipe work so another hole may need to go through the wall. I’ll know for sure when the dehumidifier arrives tomorrow.

  • Put it on a small stand?

  • Could you not place the dehumidifier on top of something - like some bricks or whatever?

  • I had been thinking this it is a matter of the room being a little cramped and until the airing rack is in place and I have the dehumidify I can’t be certain

They do make a specific wall bracket for the dehumidifier but am hoping I can avoid that cost.

  • Is it a low battery reminder for the remote/key?

  • Put it on a small stand?

What about a medium sized stand that a laundry basket will fit under?

  • Gusset do I think

  • Where to buy fairly heavy duty casters? To be fitted under tall wooden boxes used as a moveable partition

  • Bearing suppliers such as bsl branmer (or who ever they are now)

I used the ones meant for large bins.

  • Screwfix?
