  • Looking for some guidance from the hive mind; I've been given this old 6 speed Brompton and it weighs 12.8kg. I don't like the 6 speed and was thinking of switching out the rear to a 2 or maybe speed derailleur.
By my rough calcs switching out the wheels and tyres could save about 1.5kg. I was also thinking of upgrading the seat post, cranks, bb and pedals which would shave another 0.5kg off and leave me about £350 lighter.

Do we think it's work doing or should I just leave it as is?
Also, if anyones got any suitable parts i'd be very keen

  • A bit of a pain to look at and give an opinion when the pic you shared is upside down!

Personally, I wouldn't go from a 6 to 2, unless I lived in a super flat area. 6 to 3 speed maybe - you save on the weight of the derailleur and that, but not the heavy internal hub.

  • hopefully ths works better...

I'm in SE London so realtively flat although more gears woud help getting up College Road, but i've managed that fine on my track bike.
I've seen some hacks to make a 3 speed derailleur work with a fiction shifter that looks promising
