There’s a few likely reasons:

He doesn’t want to stop being president, and needs time to wrap things up (especially if he was planning on another term).

Kamala would be forbidden from seeking another term in 5 years.

There’s nothing meaningful Kamala could achieve as a brand new POTUS between now and next January with an uncertain election in the air.

It’s a lot more difficult to take over your boss’ job and successfully go through the recruitment process at the same time, than it is for your boss to stay in role while you apply for the job.

Because that gives the Reps the gift of admitting that he's been in the WH running the country while completely mentally incompetent. As it is, he can push the narrative that he's adequately competent now, but doesn't think he's up to another 4 years.

Trump doesn't think so. He wanted Biden to stay on, confident he could beat him but calculating that his chances would be much more uncertain against a younger candidate. Don't forget that a lot of the U.S. public on both sides has been disappointed that this election was the same two old guys as last time. Now Trump is going to be the old guy from last time.

It's hard to predict how this will play out, but for a time the Democrats are going to be news in a process where Trump has no participation or control. On the other hand, if the selection process runs as it normally does, the winning Democrat candidate is going to have been trash-talked by their opponents from their own party much closer to the election date than is usually the case.

Anyway, fuck knows what's going to happen. Trump might win but the hulkster will crack him with a steel chair while the refs's down and take the presidency.

But has she ever faced him down? Presumably she'll have a live debate with him. He'll probably lose his cool when challenged by a young intelligent Black female prosecutor. The provocation will be much worse than it was when he debated Hillary, and he's aged a lot. Maybe he'll self-destruct.
