  • In other mtb related business. My emtb has produced loads of error messages and intermittent power issues so is with LBS for what is likely to be a motor replacement under warranty.

So Friday I rode hard(tail) anal(ogue). First time in over a year and I thought there must be lumps of dried sealant causing the wheels to feel lumpy, it felt like the wheels were square. Turns out I have just forgotten how to pedal having only ridden turbo trainer or emtb for last twelve months. It took about 20 minutes to stop feeling like the bike was lurching as I pedalled.

Also the e bike performs best at 85rpm cadence whereas I used to pedal around 95-100 when riding non assisted bikes. So I’ll focus on higher cadence smoother pedalling while waiting for the warranty.

I think I should ride a non assisted bike once a month just to remind myself how it feels. I feel like my bike handling skills have improved with the e bike, cornering drops etc all felt more confident on the hard tail than a year ago, being able to session has really helped.

  • I always make sure I do at least "a ride" (1000m climbing) or crash before I allow myself to ride the eeb, for that exact reason. Even remembering to weight the front properly, because the extra weight on the assisted bike does a bit of that for you.

Also, the regular bike feels like a go-kart in comparison after a few electric rides

  • Very tempting!

  • Did you go for 12 or 16 degrees backsweep?

  • I've got a 50mm Thomspn 4 bolt I think off teh surly I swapped for longer one.

  • Adding another data pont, I went for 12, and it made quite the difference to my wrist comfort coming from 8deg FUNN bars.

  • 16 degree and find them really comfortable.

  • I've got a 60mm Raceface one I got for cheap on the way, but if that isn't short enough I'll give you a shout :)

  • I'm worried that might be too sweepy but, equally, 8 degrees to 12 doesn't seem like much of a change.

  • Just seen these and thought they might be up your street. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/135147734883?

  • Cheers! They could be exactly what I'm looking for!

  • Lebron and Canyon was a rad surprise.

I didn't know he was an investor.

  • Ooh, maybe they'll make a few more of their bikes in XXL or XXXL now

  • There's a reason my the press shot isn't a riding photo and they've employed the old 'hold the fish closer to the camera' trick...

  • I think we've discovered the real reason why the reach on bikes has increased so much in the last few years

  • Is anyone riding/ridden one of the new Vivid coil shocks yet? I want to upgrade from the fairly dreadful SD Select+ coil that came on my bike (no compression adjustment, why?!) and wondered how people were finding them
I've got an EXT on another bike, but a new Vivid is about the same price as a second hand Storia, and then it'd need tuning/servicing.
I'm trying to match the suspension across both bikes (Smashpot and Charger3.1 going in the fork soon) so if the Vivid feels close to an EXT then I'd be ok with that

  • I'm biased but just get a second hand Storia

  • Any interest in my YT Capra frame and kit?

This was only really used as bike park bike, so although 5 years old the front tyre is the one that came on the bike as a gauge of use.
Forks had a lower leg service 8 months ago and haven’t seen a vast amount of use since.
The rear shock had a service 12 months ago.

  • #SFABB (shit from a beaver’s butt).

The heat wave here has dried out some older trails that have been underwater for the last few years due to beaver activities. And by dried out I mean, turned into the swamp from Neverending Story…

  • Fuck me, I hate hydros.

Just drove an hour to the trails, thought my rear brake was feeling funny so was squeezing it and the front and the bloody front hose just popped out the lever.

I’m a fucking bike mechanic, how do I do so badly with hydros?

  • No olive?

  • It was still in the lever.

It was me that put it together which probably annoys me more than had it been something I’d just bought and fitted.

It’s an SLX lever with a Deore hose and caliper (because the original SLX caliper was being troublesome), wondered if there might have been a mismatch between the hose types but just checked the tech docs and both systems use bh90.

I’ve put it back together with a Sram barb and olive, they were all I seem to have but also I like how everything threads together with Sram. Maybe mixing Sram and Shimano is really asking for trouble but it seems pretty solid now.

Very tempted to just put Klampers on it though. Lol.

  • If it was installed correctly then the olive would be permanently attached to the hose afaik. I've never been able to remove a crushed olive from a previously installed hose before.

  • The compression nut defo wasnt screwed as far into the lever as the other side or as it is now. The olive looked untouched when I fished it out the lever. Dunno how I cocked that up so badly or how I managed to get a couple rides in on it like that.

It was the trails where I did my collarbone last year too so I’m glad it happened in the carpark!
