  • So the cross training dropped a minute off your 5k time? Which activity do you prefer?

  • I hadn't gone out for a fast 5k in a long time, so think that pb was a little outdated.
    I'm not built for running, I'm not built for skierg either really but I do enjoy the mix and trying to focus on technique and efficiency has been fun. For example I used to have much higher stroke rate on the rower because I assumed thats how you went faster.

    I will be introducing running back into the mix as it's still my favourite but I also want to continue with the Pete plan for rowing (I have like 2o weeks left still) - will see about the skierg as I have had shoulder pain and not sure if this is aggravating it

  • Anybody interested in a pair of Hoka Clifton 9s in the 2e wide stylee? Size 9. Only worn 'em for two (count 'em) 5k runs. I just find them too squidgy. In a funky red-and-all-colours-under-the-currant-bun colour. £85 posted. (I have pictures)
    Also a pair of never worn; only tried on Mizuno Wave Sky Neo 2s. Also size 9. This time in white. They just don't fit me and I left it too late to return them. A mere 25 notes posted (ditto re piccies)

  • And, having tried a 4x100, 200, 800, 1500 on track in the last few weeks, did my first 400 last night. Was hoping for sub 1min having done 2:11 for 800 and 26s for 200
    Went out sensibly, didn’t kill myself in the first 200, had enough to pass a couple of people in the last 30m and ended up with 56.7s
    Dead chuffed

    Paid for it in the 3000m later, had no kick after dragging 4 people round for 6.5 laps then watching them sail past me in the last lap. Ah well.

    Had enough to go under a minute again in the 4x400m at the end of the evening

    Maybe I should knock the middle distance tri on the head. 1min races are less faff than 5hr ones

  • I just bought a Garmin HR Pro chest strap for cheap.
    What would be the best, pairing it directly with my phone or with my Garmin Forerunner watch?

  • I'd pair it with the device that is recording the activities whilst they happen. In my case that's the watch, which then updates Garmin Connect and Strava later via bluetooth to my phone.

  • Anyone using some Hoka Bondi 8?
    I went for them because they were the sturdiest of the tarmac range.
    I'm less than 70kg with a backpak, use them to commute 12 rolling km each day.
    The sole is going at the heel after 8 months, not much left at the front.
    I never ran on tarmac before, I'm not fast,30 min for 6km.
    I was expecting a year out of those shoes.
    Is this normal?

    I'm 60 years old,
    and still hurting from having to spend more than 100 Euros on a pair of sneakers.
    I was hoping they would last a year.
    I'll save a bunch in a few years when I'll turn to walking.

  • They’d last a year if you ran 2/3 as much ;)

    You shouldn’t have to spend €100+ though. Just keep an eye on the end of season sales and grab a couple of pairs when they’re €50/60

  • So I shelled out for a lactate test with blood tests and everything, and was told my treshold is 165 bpm or 11.8 km/t on a treadmill.
    This was at a lab in my local uni and the dude doing the tests is apparently a well respected academic in his field. Now here's the bit I find a little confusing; for fat burn he advised me to stay in zone 1, where, according to him I should not go above 140 bpm. But according to the internets, zone 2 provides optimal fat burn and in my case this would be 135 - 147.
    Personally, I would find the latter to be much more enjoyable, and with plenty of room before my lactate threshold at 165 there should be little risk of me sabotaging my fat burn right?

  • First interval session today of a fresh 5k block, thoughts on using race shoes for interval sessions? I’ve usually just used the daily trainers for all but race day

  • got a few pairs. quickish ones (Nike Tempo / Pegasus Turbo / Asics Novablast) for interval stuff
    Pegasus for long/slow
    Alphafly/Vaporfly for races

    will occasionally wear daily runners or race shoes for intervals, but tend to keep the super shoes for race days but have something a bit quick feeling for fast sessions

  • I did a track session and a couple long runs in my Meta Speed iirc but otherwise they're race day only now.

  • Try your preference and if the fat ain't burning after a few weeks give it a go the academics way?

  • Got some cheap takumi sen 9s in my local outlet a few weeks ago and wore them for the first time today. What a difference compared with pegs. Just a joy to run in.

  • Describing the top end of zone 1 as 140bpm does seem very high to me.

  • In would like to monitor my heart rate whilst running and I guess record that data on my laptop to try and sort out a training plan.
    In don't want to take phone running with me and I would like to spend as little as possible.
    Is there any product you would recommend ? Thanks.

  • How deep you can go zone 2 without sabotaging fat burn depends on where your fat max is. They can test for that too then train/fuel differently to improve it. I did both and my economy imoroved

  • Garmin 35 on eBay and first generation garmin HRM would be a solid combo for this. If you can stretch it just slightly the 45s is a better watch and there are loads around.
