  • Brompton Electric battery woes. Is there anywhere that will service the battery? Mine has decided it doesn’t want to charge anymore, and the red light on the charger just comes on no matter what I do. Occasionally it flashes the middle light and the right hand light to tell me the battery isn’t happy.

Replacement batteries are eye wateringly expensive.

  • Right now i'm riding with a 96 chain link, this is the cage position on both the rear (stock) sprockets.

    You'll probably be fine :)

  • You only need to shorten the chain if you find your chain is falling off when you fold the bike. It makes no difference when riding.

So you can leave it as is for now.

  • Are you outside the warranty period. I had my motor, battery and charger replaced by Brompton under warranty, there were obviously problems with the early ones.

  • How is it for fitting a mobile phone in? If I could fit a mobile and keys in there it would be pretty useful.

Alas, it’s outside. And I’m the second owner. It’s done about 5800Km which I hope isn’t bad?

  • I've done more than double that so they are capable, in theory.... always worth contacting Brompton even if out of warranty, there's not much that they won't warranty TBH.

  • Well, that's just sensible :-)

  • Is the mountain bike brompton something you upgrade too? Im late tot the conversation and just saw the fantastic photo.

  • Kinetics sells a fork and rear triangle kit, which you then replace the stock options with. Ben used to do both (sell the Brompton and fit the kit) which worked out cheaper as you could “sell” the stock parts back but don’t think he does that now and you need to supply your own bike

  • Maybe if you've still got a chubby flip phone from the 90s, otherwise no chance!

  • Running a 45t alfine chainset with a the BWR 3sp and 13t sprocket parts bin special. Works great for me. There's a good Brompton gear inch calculator online I used

  • That's a shame. I find myself taking a bag just for keys and phone so that would have been a convenient solution.

  • Stem bag? I now have one of the decathlon/btwin/riverside canvas bottle holders/stem bags which are perfect just for this. And no impact on riding or the fold

  • Karen (who was really helpful) from Brompton’s online chat suggested a trip to the Brompton Junction in Clapham to test whether it’s the battery or the charger.

  • Clapham!?! The Junction store is in Covent Garden...

  • Probably some muddling of Brompton Junction and Clapham Junction, innit? That aside, I wonder if any authorised dealer would/should be able to deal with battery cases to determine faults.

  • Not sure the mileage is the issue. Check the magnetic connector on the base of the battery and the top of the contacts for any small metal pieces. They did release a replacement catch.

I would take it to Brompton Junction and see if you can get some help from them. They know there were issues. It did help me that I bought mine from them directly.

  • In other news, I'm really happy with the JK suspension block; can't believe how much better the ride feels, like a stiff but comfortable road bike.

Didn't realise how soft the newer stock suspension is compared with the old firm one either.

  • Sorry that wasn't meant to be a reply.

The battery diagnostics on Brompton suck. It’s a yes-no diagnosis, without giving much info as to the cause.

Brompton Junction might be better placed than premier distributors to diagnose issues, but unless they have tech they’re not sharing then it’s pretty much the same.

  • The dealer diagnostic tool was rewritten about a year ago and so is now much more insightful. Used to basically just say replace everything regardless of the underlying fault, which unsurprisingly was causing Brompton to hemorrhage cash on warranty work.

  • I’m done with the interweb for today…

  • I’ve joined the club.

Was worried the 2 speed wouldn’t get me up the inclines but the initial jaunt to the bakery this morning was fine. Seatpost is too short though so that will be the first thing to be upgraded.

    What’s the forum approved choice?
