Clooney for President.

Surely the cult of celebrity in the US in particular almost dictates picking a popular star as presidential candidate and then a competent politician as VP?

That wouldn’t even be that crazy. There are countries that appoint a fairly neutral character as their president, while the PM gets on with the real work of running the country.

To my knowledge: Germany, Ireland, Italy, India.

As I'm sure you know, the German president doesn't have any real power--a lesson learned in the von Hindenburg years. His role is mainly ceremonial.

In those countries, the president is constitutionally a figurehead. The U.S. is set up differently and has no equivalent of a prime minister .
