I think this thread has outlived its usefulness. America has become too primitive and nightmarish to discuss or think about. It's peopled by some other species. Nothing to do with us. Or reality. All we can do is hide behind the sofa.

Biden has softened his take that only God almighty can stop him running. Now a Dr will do.

And now Biden has tested positive for COVID.
Its just not going right for Joe.
-
• #18110
If this ends up not being a mild dose, it could be the "medical condition" required to get him to stand down.
Clooney for President.

Clooney for President.
Surely the cult of celebrity in the US in particular almost dictates picking a popular star as presidential candidate and then a competent politician as VP?
-
• #18112
That wouldnât even be that crazy. There are countries that appoint a fairly neutral character as their president, while the PM gets on with the real work of running the country.
To my knowledge: Germany, Ireland, Italy, India.

As I'm sure you know, the German president doesn't have any real power--a lesson learned in the von Hindenburg years. His role is mainly ceremonial.
-

I think he's stated too many skeletons in his closet.
He's not a neutral though, involved in a lot of human rights stuff.
-
• #18115
In those countries, the president is constitutionally a figurehead. The U.S. is set up differently and has no equivalent of a prime minister .

• #18116
Yeah, fair enough.

They need Jon Stewart for prez.

How much any U.S. president is actually in control has varied (and been debated) a lot - Cheney and Rumsfeld were widely thought to have been running the government in Dubya's first term - but you can't go in selling that to the U.S. public.

The Guardian reporting that Biden may be opening up about stepping down...

Depends on who's on the hot seat though right. The point is, Cheney and Rumsfeld were able to wield that power through the Oval Office, not through Congress.

we're slowly catching up over here in Europe though

Am I going mad or is the timing of all this joe Biden stepping down talk actually quite helpful right now. Less oxygen going to the Trump demi-martyr show during the republican convention.
-
• #18123
Maybe you're not mad. One of the few certainties is that Trump and his team think Biden is more beatable than whoever might replace him. So perhaps we are entering a phase which starts with the Dems replacing Biden and ends with Trump losing.
-
• #18124
I think the nervousness of losing the Senate and house ceding total control to Trump unimpeded by any checks and balances is focusing the dems now.

The entertainment value of this shit is already starting to get back to the previous Trump era levels.
