I’m not sure that makes sense though. You can be right and wrong about different things. Being right isn’t a universal state (although I understand the equivalency, Crichton saying the papers are full of shit while also denying climate change).
But I’m biased because I do agree with the newspaper thing to a degree - even if that’s fading with age and I’m sceptical about pretty much everything I read unless it properly cites evidence to support its arguments.
It’s funny though, I wonder why I’m comfortable to just write Crichton off as a whack job (despite the obvious dangers of what he was espousing).

It deserves no credence.
That's a stretch. It's lazy to say you don't have to consider every notion on its merits regardless of its origin, IMO.
Sure, if the origin is a raving fuckwit, that can be a helpful data point if you're lacking other means to judge the statement, but it should be obvious that's hardly conclusive on its own.
Everyone can teach you something.

Network effects transcend the reality which existed prior to the network.
The term cancel culture was coined to describe the newfound ability of the mob, not the gatekeeping ability the powers that be have always had. Of course, it's always nice to turn it around on some gatekeeper complaining about it, but gatekeeping can be performed by a single individual, or a mere handful, who rest on a power structure.
Cancelling can't happen if it's only a handful of individuals attempting it; it depends on the network effects of the internet. Although the gatekeepers have begun to respond; Musk put everything into destroying Twitter.

Are we still talking about some shit BB seller
No, we're talking about whether "Guernica" is still a valid anti-war statement now that we know Picasso was such a dick.
-
• #607
A far more interesting question.
Curious what a convincing argument to shelve Guernica looks like.

I’m not sure M.Eng. is any marker of engineering competence, given the graduates I’ve had the misfortune to work with.

I'm not sure any qualification is a marker of competence in the relevant field, these days; it only tells me you've paid the money.
My recently attained advanced diploma in mechanical engineering technology is barely worth a pinch of shit, 94% mark notwithstanding. All my textbooks were in the cloud, and I no longer have access to them, so as I forget stuff, it's just gone. Most of the instructors were terrible, and the whole institution was shonky as fuck.
Back in 2008, when I had a crack in meatspace at getting a degree in biotech, it was already apparent how much the whole thing was becoming a pay-for-play charade; there was a large cohort of foreign students who could barely speak English, but they were there to help keep the lights on, so they somehow made it through. My coordinator would tell me to stop busting my arse chasing HDs; all that matters is a pass. Pfff... got some lovely textbooks that time round though

Now doing a hollowtech BB for £80.
Whatever you think, decent value for what's likely very good quality compared to other fancy equivalents. -

Given everything else you know about him, tell me why you would give him money? And actually do his marketing for him?

Pretty shit place to pimp that fuckwad tho, eh

What’s wrong with the standard Shimano offering?
-
• #621
That sounds like terrible value

• #622
But it comes with the bragging rights that you have bought something from an interwebz edgelord prick.
Bargain

• #623
Genuinely tho. The people who are going to buy this are the people that just want to spout what he says verbatim to whichever poor soul happens to be in the vicinity.
-
• #624
I won't be buying one. Hope are my go to for the same price great products and company. Moral compass is always going to be a tricky one. Mike Ashley ain't a great guy either so?

hollowtech BB for £80....decent value
wot
I think we're getting side tracked here. The only reason I brought up his climate change denying is because a theory of Crichton's was brought up, and I wanted to highlight that it was just a theory, put forward by someone who denies climate change. It deserves no credence.
