We needed all our players to go and have the best game of their lives and be in the best form of their lives and not be carrying any small knocks or injuries. Clearly, kane wasn’t in either those categories. and the rest of our players are good not great. Ollie Watkins lovely lad, great finish last game, is not peak Harry Kane. Mainoo, love him, is tired. Rice, needs odegaard. There’s a theme.

Everyone who played for England tried, they showed up, they put a shift in. It wasn’t enough. I’m not disappointed. Centre forwards didn’t have a great tournament. This was another tournament showing the power of a team over the power of a single player. Hopefully now we can work out how to get the best out all our glamour players and the best out of Guehi and Mainoo. And Eze. We need to look for a Kyle walker replacement, as do city at some point - he’s going to be difficult to replace.
