  • Visma's tactics were spot on yesterday right? Considering the team they have.

They must be doing something right for pog and remco to be bitching about it.

Such a shame wout isn't at his best

  • Jasper Philipsen getting absolutely ripped on social media for a few days now. 🤣

  • Offffftt bit sketchy

  • Sprint? Yup, on playback he stays fairly straight and barriers narrowed

  • Mathieu sells chickens...

  • There’s other piss take signs in the pile. They know what they’re doing ;)

  • That’s a chuck-le

  • Could well be concussion. Could also be the adrenalin wearing off and realising you've been riding on a busted ankle for 40k or whatever. I know when I hit the deck I'm usually up instantly and it's not until a bit later when I'm thinking "shit, maybe I should have a sit down.. ahh maybe later"

  • Hmmm dunno personally don’t think it’s that controversial suggesting they got this one wrong…

  • Richard Abraham of The Cycling Podcast interviewed the Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team doctor before yesterday’s stage. He said the race doctor did a concussion check and deemed him fit to continue. The team doctor himself did four concussion checks, three on Sunday evening and another on Monday morning, and he was clear every time.

I definitely think there needs to be a better protocol, but as a layperson, it’s hard to see what that looks like which a) is medically robust enough and b) has a minimal impact on the sporting outcome of a stage race.

  • WVA taking a closer look at the barriers.

  • Sure but has to start with them adhering to what’s already in place. The road card is pretty simple.

  • I guess something like taking 10mins in the back of a medic van having everything cleared or not and then being allowed to rejoin in a similar position in the race, though obvs that isn't going to be perfect/easy depending on where the race is at and where the rider was at.
Or if you have to have a concussion protocol and pass you automatically get dropped back in the peloton whatever the circumstances. That just becomes the rule.
Better an imperfect rule than someone being allowed to ride on and crashing again.

  • There certainly feels like an emphasis on not disrupting the riders race over the riders health currently.

  • On the concussion debate.

They've made a special mouthguard in rugby which gives real time info of a head impact. They can analyse that data in real time and take a player off the pitch if the impact is deemed high enough.

I wonder could they do something similar in cycling with the sensor in the helmet?

I did read the mouth is more effective but there could be a tech solution here. More info on it in case anyone is interested https://shows.acast.com/realscienceofsport/episodes/rugbys-new-high-tech-mouthguards-how-they-work-and-why

  • Definitely possible.

    https://www.motor1.com/news/706396/black-box-europe-mandatory-july-2024/

Like blackbox recording in planes, but should be in cars and could be on bikes/helmets.

  • Garmin can already tell if you've crashed (mine did, but I have no numbers for it to call) so I'm sure the physics could be recorded and broadcast. Same tech would easily go into a helmet. There's probably research needed for speeds and direction of travel, etc. because not all impacts will cause concussion and presumably some whiplash events can cause concussion without the helmet or head suffering an impact but all of this could be a nice project for someone...

  • Specialized have the same thing in their Angi device. A 3-axis accelermometer would aloready give a pretty good indication of head impact.

  • That's the thing. All I could think of was MIPS. I knew there was another gadget. Adds a bit of weight IIRC (and cost) which is why I didn't buy an ANGI lid. Plus my skull is thick as fuck.

  • But helmets.

  • I'm not sure butt impacts are as important to concussions.

  • this stage, so good

was there couple of weeks ago with @pastry_bot .. puy mary is fucking steep

  • On the subject of broken collarbones, riders could avoid them by learning to land differently. Teach them to do a parachute roll.
