• Apart from the shitting, she's been fine. Clearly wants to run around like she did before, obviously not letting her off the lead/practicing recall again.

  • My dog has become a bit of a prick at nighttime.
He just turned 3, has lived with us since he was 12 weeks old or so.
Always been a good sleeper, rarely had us up in the night before.
Lately he had been barking at all hours, nothing in the garden to bother him.
Sometimes he is in his bed, laying there, barking.

I am going to jazz up his meals/ mealtimes so he gets less breakfast and more dinner, slightly later, to see if it is hunger induced. He does revisit his food bowl after the pre-bed piss (4 hours after he licked it clean after his dinner) so I am wondering if he is hungry and being noisy is him try to get us to feed him.
We don't (in the night) as we fear it will encourage more noise for food, regularly.

    Any other suggestions?
His bedroom is the kitchen, comfy bed, fresh water available, nothing different from the last 100 weeks.
(Border Terrier, BTW, so know they are stubborn little fuckers)

  • Might be worth trying a before-bedtime walk or play?
When my dog is a dick, 9 times out of 10 he just needs a bit more mental stimulation. I've been wrestling with him (rope toy) a bit more recently, which he loves. I've definitely noticed a bit of a difference.

  • good shout, added to the list

  • Food sounds a good idea to try first. I'd do it along to see if it solves it but the could always do a late evening Kong or food game.

My dog isn't a glutton, so I leave him food out always, he just eats when he's hungry.

  • Any advice about my dogs recall going a bit to shit? Used to be pretty good. Basically if there is a female dog he’s attaching his nose to their back end and he ain’t listening no more. Get him back on a long line?

  • Back to basics in that case.

  • We've had this issue with Odie. In the last 6 months or so, he's been quite bad with humping other dogs. It's maybe 1 in 5 dogs - he'll jsut decide they're going to be humped and there's fuck all I can do other than go and pull him off. Err, as in 'remove him' :-D

The advice I got from our vet was pretty much the same as I suggested above for night barking - she said to play with him at the start of a walk. play tug of war or do some other stuff that engages them mentally.

  • He’s not humping anything just following them. At dog classes he doesn’t exhibit the behaviour, I think cause he knows to behave at school. I’ve tried to make walks more engaging by doing a lot of food chase and that works until it doesn’t. It’s not a huge issue as he isn’t aggressive but it is annoying to have to go get him.

  • How old is your pup? Crumpet had real peaks and troughs with her recall training. Just when we thought we'd cracked it she went back to completely ignoring us. That happened a few times and she's now 4 and mostly very good with some bad behaviour days that are getting less and less frequent. It's a long process! I've mentioned it a few times in this thread but consistency has always been the key for us. We tend to find that when she's behaving less well it's because either my partner or I have changed what we're doing very slightly. When we both use the exact same commands and rewarding behaviour, she usually starts behaving better again.

  • He’s just over 2. I really hate the long line but I’ll get it back out again.

  • Ours has good recall until she's on heat, then she'll have a couple of bad days. We got kicked out the park a while back because she went after the geese/swans. She will completely ignore waterfowl normally but that day she decided she'd had enough.

  • Geese probably had it coming.

  • Crumpet's been practicing her smiling. She's also loving a week away in Cumbria getting wet and stinky.

  • P.S. I bloody love my dog. She's been so sweet and gentle around my 4 year old niece and 1 year old nephew.

  • Guess who is starting to chase runners?
    And be skittish around people?
Even though they never have before.
I’m hoping this is linked to them not being off the lead as much in the last week or so…..

  • Start worrying when they retrieve runners and drop them at your feet.

  • She has no retrieve yet. Some you win...

  • Off to see our pup for the first time tomorrow and make a final decision.

Though I feel the decision is already made by the family.

  • Reunited with her after 2 1/2 weeks away.
    Missed her so much.
Glad we took her on trains/buses/ubahn etc from the get go because she just treats them like the car now. Lies down and sleeps (while blocking as much floor space as possible).

  • Oh whats this? Blood? Oh that might explain things.

  • What a cutie! We messed up by not getting Crumpet on the underground when she was young. She hates the noise and the escalators. She loves every other form of travel though which makes life really easy.

  • Mine will go for geese. He used to completely ignore them until one hissed at him, now they are fair game.

  • Lützi hated it in the beginning but my partner was really good at persisting with her. I am too weak with this type of stuff. We don't let her stand on the escalators, all pick her up. I have nightmare visions of claws getting stuck.

  • One of the two times Crumpet has been on an escalator she caught a claw so a very valid concern! She didn't notice though, too busy shitting herself at the time. I felt bad but also really didn't fancy trying to carry a thrashing, 30kg+ dog on an escalator.
