Which Tyres?

  • I am by no means racing anything. But that doesn't mean I want mount expensive tyres that I have to pedal harder..

  • Are they expensive? Quick google suggests £40 which seems about normal for a TL tyre these days and if they last longer...

  • Contact Urbans are about 2/3rds of the price.

  • I have a set of these on my Surly. Before anyone asks, they came with the bike. spits at Conti

  • black ones still avail? mon favorit tyres which i seem to hoard now

  • Hi yes they are i can post out tomorrow the 25 green stripe are sold.

Pave 27 pair still available friday evening £50 posted

  • Anyone like Hutchinson Challengers? I’ve been using Sector 32mm tubeless, and come to rely on them. However availability seems low for the Sectors, and im thinking Challengers might be the next step

  • Bit of a crazy question, but is there a 25c tyre thats known for being a bit 'lower' than others? Struggling with the fork clearance and the width is not really the issue

  • A wider rim may lower your tire profile a bit, probably not helpful though.

  • I've found that veloflex tyres seem to come up a little smaller in that dimension, particularly on wider rims.

  • Thanks guys. I ordered a 24c Vittorio, should be okay...

  • Any leads on a slick & fast rolling 650b tyre around 38mm?

Gravel King Slick is the easy answer but I’ve never been able to mount one without the compressor so not ideal for commuting & winter road rides

  • Continental Contact Urban have really good grip in the wet - but not tubeless.

  • Are the new Schwalbe Luganos any good? Hugely underestimated the cost of building a bike from the frame up so looking to save a few quid on bits where I can.

  • Save elsewhere, tyres are your contact point with the ground, you should never skimp on them.

  • Schwable one speed.

Edit dont have that size anymore saddle. 30 or 50

  • According to BRR the G-One are not very quick at all.

Currently thinking either Conti Terra Speed or GK Slick, both 650b x 40

I have 47mm Conti Terra Trail on the mud wheels and love them, easy to mount too. Seems kinda silly to have a set of “road” wheels with very similar small knob tyres but according to BRR the Terra Speed roll as fast as slick GKs 🤷

Cost is the same, my only concern is the Contis wear quicker, especially if I ride them on tarmac mostly. I’m not sure I’ve ever worn a tyre out though so yeah, maybe not an issue.

  • I mean, id take brr with a large pinch of salt it's not really representative is it.

What your asking for doesn't really exist. GK are shit in my experience for size, if they're tubeless they just won't hold air, but you might find different.

  • I’ve got two sets of GK to seat and hold air fine, but they needed the compressor. Had a blowout puncture on a road ride last year, was impossible to get the bead seated again with a hand pump.

  • id take brr with a large pinch of salt

yeah we aren't really going to get peer review studies on tyre rolling resistance etc lol but i do have some faith in their methods. eg I picked up a few sets of contact urbans for work just as they were getting released and thought wow these are amazing (compared to what i was using), couple of months later was nice to see them do some tests and pretty much confirm everything i thought about them!

  • Agreed, GK's puncture constantly in South London conditions.

They're terrible to mount tubeless as they're so loose, I've always been able to get them on rims with just my hands and no effort which raises alarm bells. I had to end up using CO2 where nearly every other tyre I've mounted just needs a track pump.

  • I'd say BRR is much more relevant for slick road tyres than ones with tread. When looking at off road tyres there's other considerations such as tread pattern which BRR don't consider.

  • Agreed, GK's puncture constantly.

I really rated these new GK SS+ tyres for ages, but starting to see lots of punctures on them, which is annoying. Thinking of going back to Sawtooths, but they feel quite slow. Hmm.

  • Unless you're training for 24hr TTs and you're sick of spending £££ on tyres.

  • I have Gravelkings and they are great. 0 punctures in 1 year of commuting and almost no wear. They don't feel slow either
    I use inner tubes btw
