I prefer to swipe my phone and be done with it. Happy for the surcharge if there is one.
Great if you can afford the luxury.

Whereas the time taken cashing up at the end of the day and taking the cash to the bank and till discrepancies are all totally free…
Whilst I agree that cash should be accepted and digital payment shouldn’t solely be relied upon, the idea that cash payments are free for the retailer isn’t really true

Or use a contactless bank card rather than a mobile.
These seem pretty common across the western world?

Sorry I'm in dirty South London. We still have places setting a minimum charge for card transactions or the shop passing the cost onto the customer (I'm not even sure if that's legal?)
contactless bank card rather than a mobile
Aren't they basically the same thing as far as the card machine is concerned?
As in, they're all classed as card payments and incur the same costs -

Yes, but I think the point is that many people can't afford a phone smart enough to have bank cards uploaded onto it.
It's been a battle to get some of my elderly relatives to have any form of a mobile phone (one is using an iPhone - and no chance of getting cards onto it, one is using a Nokia 8210 and one cannot be convinced at all).
I've got cards on my phone but I never use it for that. Much prefer to have a wallet with physical cards (plus other things like driving license) and some backup cash. Generally also carry around some stamps and some plasters too #dadlife.

Meh, you never need that in a hurry.

It isn't, effective across the EU since Saturday 13th January 2018.

Which I don't think is totally unfair for a small shop to do. But when using cash means saving some pennies, people will need the option.
Waiiit, did you say EU?

Apple Pay makes Singapore cards work for contactless payments when the cards themselves don’t work- as I have been finding across France in the last few weeks.

There are 7m+ people in the UK who have bad credit and can't get a swipeable card or pay-by-phone. We have to make do with chip and pin. https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/63f7bbd78fa8f527f7342eff/Basic_Bank_Account_Report_2022.pdf

As long as places also take cash and can accommodate people that need it, I guess it's not the most shitty thing to pass the cost on to the customer. Though I don't think a consumer or the shop should be taking the hit.

The massive shift to contactless payments during the pandemic tipped back some as lockdown eased, but there's still a lot less people with cash in their pockets than before 2020. One group this impacts is those begging in the street.

I paid for everything by card when I was in Detroit last year. Dont think I even saw a dollar bill let alone used one.
And that's small family outfits not just Target and Walmart

I’m the opposite, I’m trying to go back to using cash where possible while out and about and tend not to use ‘card-only’ businesses.
Each to their own I guess. I find most small businesses are more than happy to take cash. My local cornershop supposedly gives discount to people buying fags and booze with cash. -

Same
Discounts for cash is usually a sign that they're doing something 'dodgy' but fuck it.

Idgaf if they’re getting their snide on, in this day and age everyone has to sort themselves out first. If they prefer cash I’m happy to oblige.
I used to take part of my wage in cash each week at a previous job as it kept me in a lower tax bracket and meant I didn’t pay off my student loan. Also found it the best way to budget my ‘walking around’ money. If the cash is gone then it’s gone.
Much safer than just indiscriminately tapping the card then turning off your phone notifications so your banking app can’t judge you any more. -

My favourite Germans and cash Vs credit card from a few weeks ago was at my Berlin lido (is lido correct? Where you go to swim, tan, look at bodies and eat fries).
His reasoning for no cards was that he has a deposit on glass bottles/mugs.
If people pay with card and then get their deposit back in cash he is fucked.
He has to get coins at cost all the time anyway. -

Me too. Agree with you.
My local has under the counter cash only booze. So much nicer than the UK brewed stuff.
Strong agree
