making a note, i have some tau to paint up at some point to get over my ptsd of my 7th?? ever model of a cadre fireblade where i just thought you could paint white on - collecting different recepies

i'm not sure if you're familiar with the "cult of paint youtube channel" but they have this great guide on volumetric panel highlighting for armour which might be up your alley if you liked that, they done this wonder tank recently

Was playing around with white last night. Pic isn't very good but I find it's hard to get decent shading with white so went for a warmer sandy colour as a base and built light grey (GW grey seer) and two whites (GW corax white and pro acrylic bold titanium white) on top to give some gradient and warmth. Think it looks ok.

Want to try with a cold blue shadow at some point too.

Thanks, I find edge highlighting helps pull blends together nicely. Somehow tricks the eye into not seeing the different colours as separate layers (more obvious with brush blending tbh).

The yellow takes ages. Like white you can't just slap it on and get good coverage so I build from a light brown (most of the walker's yellow) or red (leader dude) normally. Did some very basic pack markings on some shoulder pads the other day and I realised I'd done 5 layers on a squad I was supposed to be "speed painting" 🤣 Looks good though!

i feel you on the yellow, i've tried a number of approaches now and the best by brush has been averland sunset - then layering up, although the GW contrasts over white then sepia shading works well too for something speedy

This thread gives me so much nostalgia about my teens and makes me want to buy some but I have 95 other things on my plate so that will never happen

This is how I feel every time I click the thread.
I never really ever understood how to actually play 40k properly and sucked at painting.
Visiting games workshop was a real highlight of a trip into the big town as a kid though.

Bound to be a local tabletop gaming club you could pop along to for an intro game… 96 things on a plate is fine…

Tried using thinned down oils for pin washing/panel lining. All the YouTubers clean up with white spirit after but it's pulling off the paint underneath with a very light touch cotton buds rub. I gloss varnished first. What am I doing wrong?

+1 for being fascinated but no grasp of how to play or really paint as a kid.

I still always enjoy a peek into the GW window when I pass by.

It's been a while since I panel lined airplanes with oils but seem to recall using lighter fluid?

Was all the paint properly cured before putting the oils on? Also maybe try not pushing as hard?

I've not experienced lifting off the paint underneath when doing this but I know these can be issues.

I appreciate from afar now, also they are fuckin expensive now and don’t have all the metal models they use to sell

I'm looking to sell my Redgrass Games R9 painting desk light, it's brand new in box from their kickstarter.

I've been storing it until I can get my hobby room sorted but finances have took a hit so that's on pause for a while and reluctantly having to have a clearout.

Late reply but I think you nailed it and I was too impatient and the paint (specifically the varnish) hadn't cured fully before the oils. Haven't tried again since but will try waiting longer between steps.

Lost my mojo a bit recently but finished off some Fenrisian wolves I started ages ago last night as well as the Cyber Wolf model which is such a bad model it made painting it less fun. It's resin (which I didn't realise when ordering) so has loads of supports that need cutting off and cleaning up, loads of bleed from the mould to clean up too, the cast isn't that great and missing some detail where it hasn't filled the small gaps in the mould. Plus the size is off, it's physically smaller than the other wolves, slimmer in profile when looking head on, and it's wonky so looks a bit like it's falling over.

For a bionically enhanced monster wolf it's a bit of a let down.

In better news I got the Tyrannic War book in the post as a "sorry its taking so long, here's a free gift" for the Combat Patrol magazine to start shipping. Not really sure I'm looking forward to the massive pile of shame I'll accumulate but am looking forward to some different things to paint and having options to mix it up.

Had this "Invocation of the Elements" Ethereal (store anniversary model) built up for a while but struggling to think of a colour scheme as I don't have any Tau already (apart from another ethereal I painted up a while back) and was looking for something that would look suitably cool for a limited ed mini. In possibly the most British thing ever I was visiting the Oxford Botanical Gardens the other week and this water lilly flower both looked like a cool colour combination and a challenge to paint. Just look how deep that yellow is and the pastel purple, sick blends!

I'd already built the model with the water element option so this seemed suitably perfect!
Here's my attempt at replicating the perfection of nature. Pretty happy with the result.

This that airbrushed? Looks amazing

Yes, the main effect is achieved with an airbrush. Black base coat and then GW Grey Seer to lighten up the areas of focus, then white to further brighten the focus points before adding the base colours. The purple was a mix of mostly white with a little Phoenician purple and the yellow was mix of mostly white with some yriel yellow because I wanted good yellow saturation as opposed to using a pale yellow which would be more pastel-like. All applied in thin layers building saturation.

Then the yellow on the robes got a few thin coats of pure yriel yellow to build the brightest areas, and several glazes on the paler areas to soften the transition.

The staff got the same airbrush treatment but then had a caledor sky glaze applied to get the blue green transition. I tried to keep the colour palette limited so most of the details are grey, apart from the gems on the hood/collar thing (which was all brushwork and is supposed to imitate the colours in the middle of the lilly flower).

Been watching a YouTube channel called heresy is for heretics where they do loads of bright neon colours which strangely helped with the technique for this.
