Not exactly cheap is it? it works out slightly more as our comprehensive contents insurance which covers all the bikes, including away from home plus household goods, valuables as well as laptops and phones also away from home.
I guess it might make sense if you race and crash a lot?

I think Laka have a good reputation for successfully paying out and covering bits like "it was in my car and got stolen". I insure a 2k bike in W9 for around £15/month which feels completely fair in the grand scheme of things - but is also a good point that my whole flat insurance is also £15/month, I guess its just likeliness of a claim?

I’m beefing with my insurance company atm and am at the Financial Ombudsman stage. Policy wording is key in these situations, you would be surprised (or not) at how narrowly your contents insurer may choose to interpret the wording and deny your claim. Bespoke bike insurance (if you have nice bikes and can afford the insurance) is probably good if you’re off the beaten track of garage lock up to z3 work lock up and back.

Can you hear the tone of regret?

I thought I had this with AXA through home protect but they don’t insure accidental damage on bikes over 1.5k
I now have all my race bikes insured through Laka who apparently are very good at paying out and have diamond level policies on valuation and replacement value.
Message here is, as per, check the small print. It cost me a couple of grand at Reiver ;)

No worries! Genuinely couldn't remember whose link I'd clicked on, so knew someone would hopefully have a nice surprise.

Am I the only one slightly bemused that people locking their bikes by a wheel have apparently been getting payouts from Laka community and adding to the cost for everyone?
Also seems weird to have been insisting gold rated lock … but not to actually lock the frame.

Hi all,
How has your experience with Laka?
My friend has had a bike stolen at Putney Leisure Centre.
Lodges claim, provides photos and receipt of bike, him on bike, bike only etc.
Claim denied as he cannot provide receipt of the lock it was locked up with….
Seriously - if that’s it, waste of time and money -

Sorry about your friends loss, but that’s literally how all insurance companies operate at a basic level.
If the bike was worth 3 grand and was locked with a very basic lock, they’re unlikely to be cover you as the quality of security is inadequate, and the contract has been breached as most insurance companies have a minimum security requirement, which your friend did not fulfill.
This is not unique to Laka. -

I think it would be fair to highlight when signing up ‘make sure you have a Gold rated lock (and keep the receipt)’.
As this is vital, and I’m sure many won’t realise, it shouldn’t just be in T&Cs.

From memory you don’t need the receipt just a photo of the lock. Not even sure it has to be on the bike. I don’t think that’s a very onerous request and they do ask repeatedly during sign up for all these photos. I think your friend just messed up.

It is made very very clear. They even have a list of locks and links to buy them during sign up. And you don’t even need to keep the receipt. For some reason this guy’s friend ignored the very basic and easy instruction to take a photo of his lock.

Sounds like I did too. And logging in I can't see any mention at all of 'take a photo of your lock or provide a receipt'... Just 'add a photo of your bike or receipts'.

Interesting. - Maybe I’m wrong about this then - I’m going to have another look and ask laka if we do need receipts for locks, bikes etc. Or if photos are enough
-
• #45
I’ve had a reply from Laka - no need for receipts, photo is fine. You will just need some evidence that you ever owned a lock. This is made clear during sign up as well as being predictable and reasonable.

Thanks for replies all.
Still seems a bit excessive, but I guess that’s the world we live in now. -

I tend to take a quick snap of my bike whenever I’ve locked it up
