  • have to sort the shifting and still waiting for the use seatpost to arrive, but it's done :)

  • Sweet!

  • Impressive work there! How'd the alignment of the disc tab work out?

  • thanks

@7ven - it's spot on. the jig was designed to hold the rear dropouts 135mm apart

  • first proper ride on this. ex- @Skant cannondale also here :)

  • Awesome job man! I have such a soft spot for steel Konas, always suprised there aren't more on here. Are the forks from a sutra? I built up a honky for my girlfriend and was looking at doing something similar to you before I found a Wheelhouse.

@Jokke_A what size did you end up getting on your Honky Inc. in the end and are you still riding it? The photos of yours on Kona world were a big inspo on my hunt so thanks for that!

  • thanks!

i found that (at least locally) the joe murray era stuff is sought after, but the newer ones are only popular with dirt jumpers and in the downhill scene. the road bikes/tourers are almost nonexistent. idk about the uk..

the forks are random 26", disc only, non sus corrected project 2s, don't really know if there's a difference between these and the ones that came with the tourers (eg. dew)

  • so the rival groupset went

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8CK6CLGTjM

(sold). didn't like the brake feel, didn't like the shifting performance..

so after adding some bling to my pesenti, it kindly donated its trusty veloce group and got a pair of hy/rds (wife's city bike has them and i liked them a lot)

now, the bartape.. this was the only thing i had at home and decided to try it on, following good gazelle tradition. not a perfect colour match for the lettering, but it grew on me. looks great in the sun. the original bar end plugs were so brittle, they just snapped into pieces when pushed in :)

  • cool cool bike
do you plan to repaint the bike?

  • As someone who's modus operandi is to buy a complete bike, break it and buy another one, I'm always impressed when people go to a lot of trouble to squeeze some new life into older bikes in funky ways. Very impressive.

I'd leave it raw where the work has been done but remove the wheel stickers. The bar tape-frame paint match is quite something.

  • Looks real nice!
Love the raw look on the mods. Have your used a clear coat to stop them from rusting?

  • Good to see some updates! Don’t normally love red bikes but this works so well. Agreed I’d remove wheel stickers. Love me a Kona

  • thanks everyone!

wheel stickers will be going, thought about removing them, but didn't have the time to fiddle.

paint is staying as it is - the mods weren't clearcoated, will need to fill a few pinholes in the brazing. the interesting thing is that the wife's genesis was clearcoated and is showing some light rust under the laquer, while the kona is rust free.. :D

  • Such a bold and cool choice to go with Campa and Benotto tape on a modded Kona! 10/10

  • managed to bodge on a “set” of mudgurards for the crap weather.

also installed a hamax holder, but the seat is so far back and over the rear axle, that it is basically a wheelie machine, with the kid in the seat.. :D might have to redo the rear dropouts and make the rear end longer.. all that rear mudguard trimming for nothing… :D

wheel stickers are etched into the metal.. tried peeling them, but they didn’t play nice, so i’ll have to take the heat gun into battle next time

  • so this is now in testing phase - had to install the original forks as the neck of my alpinas somehow rub against the inside of the headset cup.. (never thought this could happen, steerer seems straight). otherwise it is as brilliant as i remembered it.

  • Excellent work mister!

  • finally figured out why it was so cheap.. :D

discovered it by chance during assembly, although i guess it would’ve presented itself rather quickly on the test ride.

put a plug in it and glued it with silver, hopefully it lasts

  • Oh wow, good thing it didn't pop loose during a ride. Tidy soldering!

  • the old railway line between italy and slovenia is pretty nice for a family ride!
