  • Think rotor make them now.

  • they don't seem to have 110/5 bolt chainrings with 13t gaps between them though, unless i'm missing something

  • The FD shifting isn't exactly amazing anyway! It's..... fine.
If that is coming from SRAM then I'd take with a massive pinch of salt as they aren't over the moon about anyone using anything other than SRAM chainrings.

  • I'm pretty sure the FD will barely notice the difference between a 13t gap and a 14t gap...

The difference in radius is probably very similar between 50/36 and 46/33 anyway.

Oops - you said 50/34. According to Wolf Tooth, the difference in radius between 46/33 is about 26mm, while the difference in radius between 50/34 is more like 32mm. Gap between 50/36 is 28mm.

  • If that is coming from SRAM then I'd take with a massive pinch of salt as they aren't over the moon about anyone using anything other than SRAM chainrings.

SRAM aren't over the moon about anyone using a front derailleur, on account of them never having managed make one that didn't suck massive giant donkey balls.

  • hm, i actually have red carbon cranks with a pm spider. 110BCD, 5 bolt. Wonder if can find chainrings that are compatible with SRAM flattop chain

I have used Buzz 50/34 with flat top and it seems fine.

  • Trying to decide between GRX 2x12 vs 105 2x12 on my Dolan GXC. At least to begin it’s going to be mainly roads and trying out gravel routes near me. From my reading it would appear the main difference is the clutched rear mech and the gearing options?

My current plan is to go 105 with a compact chainset, at 11-36 cassette. That will give be < 1:1 and still the 50 t for road riding. Then if I find myself riding a lot of gravel swap out the rear mech to the clutched GRX as they are compatible between the two froupsets from what I can see.

Anything I am missing or overlooking here?

  • Just get GRX, turn the clutch off for road stuff a couple of times then forget and stop bothering.

  • I ride a clutched ultegra Rx mech on one of my road bikes. It's wonderfully quiet.

  • I'm looking to put a 1x groupset on an old canti Tricross- is older Sram the only option for cable operated 1x 10/11spd and I don't want to change the HG freehub either?

Would prefer a good spread with a 1:1 lowest ratio.

I am currently running Shimergo 8spd so will have to be changing pretty much everything so value for money definitely preferred.

  • Rival 1 and Apex 1 are quite good. I have a good amount of experience with these. Feels sram-y.

  • Hi,
I’m building a MTB up from a frame and I know nothing about MTB stuff. I am building it specifically for off road touring.

Can anyone suggest a 1x groupset that is reliable for long tours.

I’ll be looking for second hand bargains hopefully as this is my second bike so in all honesty I’ll not be using it as much as my everyday touring bike.

    Thanks

(Also if anyone has something that they want to sell please drop me a PM 😀)

  • My SLX 1x11 from a few years ago (M7000) has been pretty much set and forget. Got it from OEM eBay for cheaps.

  • Roads in the PooK are so fucking rough you need a gravel bike these days anyway (says that guy that ate shit hitting potholes in Portugal). I've got a GRX RD to stick on my road bike for the clutch to stop chain slap on those horrible 'near London' lanes.

  • Will a Force 1 crankset have beef with a flattop AXS Rival chain and derailleur? Or are they an unofficial happy couple?

  • Not an ideal with the original chainring.

  • I think the rollers on the flattop are bigger, not ideal.
If you have it already I'd try it anyways, in time should wear out to the right shape

  • Hope you're joking with that suggestion...

Sounds like carnage. It would probably concentrate load on a single pin where the chain meets the ring and accelerate chain wear.

  • Maybe. Or maybe not. All I'm saying if I had the parts already I'd put it together and test it around the block.

  • Most of the 12speed mechanicals are really quite reliable.

  • I ran a flat top 12 speed chain on a Shimano 11 speed crank and group set. Didn't die, got like 15k Kms out of the chain with 1, maybe 2, cleans. I hate cleaning chains. Chainrings and cassette still going sound.

  • Thanks.
I went for SLX. I don’t think I need to spend more for my touring bikes.

  • Shimano seem to have introduced a revamped shifter during the life of the 9000 range to improve the cable routing. The new shifter had the code ST-9001.

Does any nerds/mechanics on here know if the shifter plates for 9001 will fit on 9000 shifters please? ie are they cosmetically the same.
