Slimming down the end caps on the axle with a bench grinder seems to be another option. I think 1mm either side would make enough difference.
Yeah, there's plenty of spare space to work with; I have a wheel on which I swapped the 8/9/10s cassette body for a 7s one, and then jammed a slightly machined 10s billet cassette back on.
