  • The election is a week tomorrow, so if they have a bombshell story and want it to get noticed, then they are rapidly running out of time.

  • Reckon he could be caught digging up and fucking Captain Tom's dead corpse tomorrow and still not lose from here.

  • He's probably right. Sadly.

  • He's only fucking 61 or whatever

  • The Labour leader told reporters on Wednesday he did not think Britain would go back into any of the three blocs while he was alive, all but ruling out rejoining even if he wins a second term in office.

The ‘all but’ is doing some fantastically heavy lifting in the lede here.

  • It's hard to disagree with much in the article.

As shit as it is we have so many issues right now, that using up all your political capital on rejoin (assuming they have much political capital) is a fools errand.

We shouldn't have had a referendum. We shouldn't have voted leave. We shouldn't have triggered article 50. But we are where we are now. If we can build a solid industrial strategy, rebalance the economy - geographically and sectoraly, then we can make inroads into the factors that caused Brexit.

  • meanwhile in Europe:

“It’s not that people are thinking good things about the UK, it’s not that they are thinking bad things. They are not thinking about the UK at all,” said one senior source close to the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen.

    https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/01/eu-would-not-rush-to-reopen-brexit-talks-with-labour-say-brussel-sources

  • We don't need to 'rejoin' the EU.
As a sovereign nation, we could pragmatically choose to align our post-Brexit legislation with existing, or even proposed EU legislation.
That will reduce the friction of our current gritty agreement, and save ÂŁms of unnecessary paperwork.

  • I think he's being realistic rather than gloating

  • 'I am delighted to have the support and the backing of The Sun. I think that shows just how much this is a changed Labour Party, back in the service of working people.'

That’s right, kneel and kiss the ring you lickspittle cunt

  • I don't think a close observation of politics or media supports your perspective on this.

The Sun have leapt on the Starmer band wagon because they have nowhere else to go. The power dynamic is very much in Starmer's favour.

  • Isn't this basically the first political story the Sun have featured on their front page since Truss left?

I don't read it, but I listen to a papers digest most days, and when every other paper has a major political story reported from their perspective the Sun will run something about Jordan decorating her front room.

They've spent however long running anything but to hedge their bets. Now right at the last minute when the aggregate of all polls has Labour winning they endorse them?

  • Then he should use that power to call out the sun for being the hateful, divisive, rag it is and say he doesn't want their support (of course he could also add something about being happy for their readers' support - whatever that is).

  • Remember when someone in this thread called Ken Loach 'reprehensible'? Incredible.

  • What would that achieve?

More likely he will do Leveson part 2.

  • if I have to hear this dweeb’s voice in a youtube ad again I swear

  • More likely he will do Leveson part 2.

This is why I assume they are now backing him.

  • They are backing him because their brand is that they pick the winners, and desperately hope it gives them some level of influence post election.

I haven't read the editorial, but from the BBC coverage they have also put him on notice for the attack lines they will run from day one.

  • yeah, the balance of power is in Starmer's favour, and yet he still felt the need to pay fealty to the bullshit notion that the Sun is the authentic voice of the working people. craven behaviour.

I'm not expecting him to be 'fuck the sun', as nice as it would be for him to show some solidarity with the actual working classes, but he could have just given an anodyne 'support is welcome from all quarters' response. he chose not to. because he's a cunt.

  • ^^ Well yes, but I more meant that that is one of their priority asks.

However, given that they don't even have the courage to publish their numbers anymore Idk how much difference it'll make. I'm hoping in conjunction with the mild weather and long daylight hours it will help a bit.

One of my concerns is a good majority from a shallow vote.

  • Also Origin Story has an episode on Starmer which I found interesting.

  • Do they mention what his dad did for work? Always been curious.

  • Yes, same.

I've not finished it yet, but he was much more politically active from an early age than I knew - I guess that shouldn't be surprising but I found it so.

I'd assumed he was a barrister and came to politics in the same way that business people do from time to time, but that doesn't seem to have been the case at all.
