  • This should be pretty quick project as its almost there. Pervious owner fitted disc tabs and got cable routing brazed on.

Plans are replace the S/S setup with XT 11 speed (ordered) while retaining the chainset.

New tyres, I want to use René herse 52mm but if that doesn't fit I'll go down to 42mm. I have some 60mm Berthoud guards that I haven't used from my roberts (didn't fit) so I hope I can use them.

Provably swap out the finishing kit with some silver Thomson and carbon xc bars.

Should be turning up later today.

  • cool, sounds like a solid plan.
i love these old konas - in fact i've got a similar era lava dome waiting to be built up.

  • It arrived with a dent in the bloody down tube.

  • FWIW, I once sold my old '05 Allez (irreplaceable bike) that ended up the same from the bars catching it in the box. Seems pretty superficial, no? But vexing all the same.

  • It is superficial, annoying though. Keeping the bike, the seller gave me £100 off.

  • What did you pay initially? £100 off sounds like they knew, they were in the wrong.

  • £500 posted. He didn't know, the qr was left in the from wheel and no bubble wrap used around the tubing. The guy seems decent.

  • I second this, it does sound like a 'whoops, I got caught out, sorry mate' kinda payment.
Edit: Having seen your reply I think I and Mikkel are probably being cynical. eBaying bikes has that effect.

  • He actually fully refunded me straight away. I then got in touch with him over text and we came to an arrangement.

  • Man, what a bummer, although I'm glad the seller handled it well.
Will you try rolling it out? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JTDeXG0kweA

Or is it an ovalised tube?

  • I'll probably get it resprayed and rolled or filled if i like the bike. It isn't deep.

  • I'ld go nail polish in fitting colour.
Now it's broken in, you won't worry bout the new ones.
And you can reuse the nail polish for them too!

  • Front brake has sticky driveside pistons. I've bled the brakes and that didn't help so ordered some lubricant. If that fails it'll be new pistons and seals.

Managed to snag some compass 26 2.3 tyres on here. Vitoria peyote 2.25 fit with enough room for guards so fingers crossed.

  • Compass tyres fitted. The Vittoria looks better but this will work with guards better and better for my country back road usage. Still waiting for the chainring and chain. Put on some swept back bars, need to find some in silver and then a silver stem to match.

  • Have a look at Bontrager Satellite bars. They're more or less identical to Ritchey Kyote in terms of shape, just a bit less wide. They're much cheaper though. I've got them on my Genesis and they're a really nice shape, particularly with Ergon grips.

  • The bike looks great by the way! Agreed that silver bars and stem would look even better.

  • Very nice! Those cranks look great. I agree that it needs silver bars and stem

  • Yeah, just what I had around. May need to wait until next month, I've already spent a lot.

  • Unfortunately I was assaulted while on the bike for tapping on a bonnet of a close passing car. Saddle is dead, everything else is fine.

Done more work on the bike as work gave me a few days off to rest. The front brake somewhat works but will give it a full strip with new seals later.

New parts since last pictures are hope 22 pedals, Berthoud saddle, ritchey 60mm stem with ritchey kyote bars, all silver.

I'm having to return the berthoud mudguards as they are long but drilled as short so all the length is in the tail and pretty much touch the floor. SJS said that's how they're supposed to be and it wasn't until I sent them a picture of my Roberts with the same guards they agreed.

Has anyone fitted 27.5 pdw to 26 wheels? Guess the mudguard line would be all off?

  • Ah so sorry you've been assaulted like that, that's horrendous! Kill cars, etc etc.

Re: mudguards, I remember reading somewhere, can't remember where - probably Jan Heine? - (EDIT: It's on the Velo Orange website for re-radiusing mudguards) that with metal guards you can tease out a new radius, say for 26" to 27.5" or vice versa, by going from one end to another and squeezing and forming them to be narrower or wider. If you widen the guards, as you go along the overall wheel radius will decrease whereas if you squeeze them to be narrower the overall wheel radius will increase.

To answer your question, you probably could convert metal guards from 27.5 to 26", but they might be a tad wider (so consider frame fit) along with being a smaller wheel radius.

    Hope you rest well!

  • Thanks, I feel this will be more difficult with pdw guards as they're pretty stiff.

  • Ah, shame that. I wouldn't try to force them to be smaller by moving the stays further either, could cause stress risers around the bolted bits...

  • Velo orange silver guards it is. I like the simple fitting of PDW.

  • Join the (Velo Orange) club! I'm gonna shamelessly plug my own laser-cut mudflaps if you fancy even more mud coverage.
