Thanks Kimmo, do you mean fugly from a shape or branding point of view?
-
• #5256
The shape. But the branding is fussy too. Who wants a blue stripe on their headset? That nice plain one I linked is cheaper too! Looks about the same shape as a Chris King, but without the ridiculous spend. Once you have ally cups and cartridge bearings, what more do you need in a headset?

Not if you agree with Sheldon Brown about that

Hello Lufguss hivemind.
This Dave Yates-built 753 frame is winging its way to me and I’m wondering what to do to build it up. It’s going to get a modern groupset so I can use a set of 50mm carbon wheels I’ve got hanging about.
The seat post and headset are Dura Ace so that could be a direction to go in but…. Money. Was considering 9000 chainset and the rest in Ultegra.
I do like Campag on older bikes though.
I’m told the bike was built for the Ever Ready Halfords team before being resprayed. As a nod to that I’m thinking black ITM bars and stem, white tape, white cables.

Between that and your silver post, I'd say you really need that 9000 crankset to tie it together. Or if you go the Campy route, a carbon crank with that white text on it could also work, but then the seatpost is kind of on its own, only the headset to keep it company.
How about just throw it together with whatever Shimano you can cobble together, and just gradually build up a 9000 group from used parts when you find them at a good price, maybe just NOS for the crankset?

I have a silver one of these on a bike and would also recommend. It's fine and the shape is much nicer.
Idk why all headsets aren't this sort of shape.

Selling my C40 unfortunately. Details found in Classifieds :-)

Yeah good idea. Really needs a 9000 crankset the more I think about it. You pick up a whole groupset far cheaper than I imagined so I’ll just wait for one to come up.

How I approach it:
Step 1:
- frame for 7s or more (130mm): option for modern groupset
- frame for 6s or less: no modern groupset, too much trouble
Step 2: Groupset (if modern groupset option):
- Silver:
- 11s new Campagnolo centaur (but with skeleton brakes) or 2nd hand dura-ace 9000
- Silver 105 is painted and not polished, to avoid
- 10s or below: many options
- Specialite TA carmina cranks are a nice option
- 11s new Campagnolo centaur (but with skeleton brakes) or 2nd hand dura-ace 9000
- Black:
- many options but Campagnolo Chorus has the best modern option price/look/feel ratio
- many options but Campagnolo Chorus has the best modern option price/look/feel ratio
Step 3: wheels
- Silver: very painful to find
- Black: a lot
Step 4: Cockpit
- Silver: Classic stem: Cinelli / Deda / Nitto
- Black: Modern stem
- frame for 7s or more (130mm): option for modern groupset

Thanks.
It’s 126mm spacing but I’ve spread stays before to take a wider hub. Really no drama.
I love the look of Centaur but 9000 is a no brainer if I can pick up a full groupset for not much more than £400.

Hopefully followed by dropout alignment?
-
• #5267
Over 2mm each side? No need as far as I can see. I’d back a well tightened QR lever to pull the dropouts fairly parallel.

Just realized that yes 7s are supposedly still 126mm. Never had issue putting a 130mm in it! Maybe because it is big frame 64cm, but yours is too. But yes requires a well tighten skewer.
May I ask what is the freewheel you have on your wheels? If 11s Shimano and Campagnolo are supposed to be compatible-ish (never tried though).

They are indeed, spacing is the same. Friend of mine always buys Ultegra cassettes instead of $$$uper Record 11s ones

• #5270
Yeah my wheels are Campag freehub. I’ve mixed and matched Campag with Sram and Shimano bits before. No issues at all.

• #5271
Love the paint on that. Are there any more pics on a build thread anywhere?
-
• #5272
All personal choice innit but for me on a steel frame 5 arm campag unbeatable; I guess ‘not so modern groupset on old frame’.
And almost always quill stem.

Nothing exceptional, just an old Pinarello Veneto which was entry level, but cool to ride.
Have a nice story: went on a group ride with Jan Ullrich (we both live in Munich), and I was the lonely bike receiving an acknowledgment from him, reminded him his Telekom years!
@greeno: I agree on the 5 arm Campagnolo (and Skeleton brakes). Mavic Starfish are pretty cool too, but do not qualify for "modern groupset" anymore!

It's a bit yuck, and quite likely to make the axle flex slightly to put the locknuts hard against the dropouts... Probably making for a tad extra friction, and uneven cone wear if not a cartridge hub.
I wouldn't sweat an OLD increase of 2mm or less without dropout alignment, but IMO 4mm should be tweaked.

Slimming down the end caps on the axle with a bench grinder seems to be another option. I think 1mm either side would make enough difference.
