Mark Cavendish, the best UK cyclist?

Is there still a chance for Cav, if some team mate is unable to race, or is it all over by now?

Which, Cavendish beating Petacchi or Petacchi being doped? Both happen to be true.

But not necessarily at the same time. I don't recall an early Cav career win in which he beat a doped Petacchi. This would be 2007 being the period of Petacchi's first ban and Cav's first season at top level. I don't recall a race win for Cav over Petacchi for that year. Might be wrong though hence "Not sure that's right".

He has the joint record with Merckx, let’s not forget, so it isn’t the Merckx record any more.

He came damn close to taking the outright record last year, when his performances before the Tour weren’t great, bar the Giro stage win. If I’ve learnt one thing about Cavendish over the last twenty years or so, it’s that you never, ever write him off.

Absolutely true. He's been written off so many times before. Save for that mechanical last year I think he had it in the bag.
