Turbo Trainer Advice

  • I have the turbo set up against a wall when not in use and then slide it out to face my monitor so those tiles might come apart when moving it. £80 does seem like a lot for a rubber mat!

  • Yeah, it's silly price. In the past I've also used simple carpet mats that people use in hallways.

They might not be super wide but they cover the sweaty bits quite well and heaps cheaper.

  • I have the planet X one which seems pretty good - only one I've had so no comparison.

    Only £15 though

  • I’m onto a decathlon one. Actually think it’s a heavy yoga mat tbh.

    Ikea rug was the best.

  • Just switched out the freehub on my kickr core for the campagnolo one. As I’m on chorus 12 speed now. But running the 12 speed cassette without the spacer on the kikcr the cassette won’t tighten, and with the spacer included in the box (2mm) the 12t is causing the chain to rub against the frame. Is it as simple as I need a 1mm spacer? Anyone else have issues with 12 speed campy on the kickr other than having to pay £120 for a trainer cassette and £40 for a freehub.

  • Does a smart trainer also work as a power meter? Planning to use a power based training plan on my Garmin paired to a wahoo trainer and not sure if I also need a power meter crank/pedal for this to work?

  • Does a smart trainer also work as a power meter?

    Yes

If you plan to do outside rides as part of the plan then may not be a bad idea to have a PM (crank, pedal one etc) to keep in consistent but not totally necessary I'd say

  • Hoping someone can help… going from 11 spd 130mm QR to 12 spd 142mm threaded thru axle on my wahoo kickr V5. I’ve removed the original cassette and original 130mm end caps and QR skewer, and installed a 12 speed Ultegra cassette and the 140 NDS adapter, but what do I put on the DS as I can’t figure out what (if any) adapter that came with the trainer will work? Do I also need a different skewer?

  • Replying to myself: is this correct?

I removed the original axle nut from the drive side and put one of the chamfered end axle nut on from the above photo… it seems to work ok.

Next question - isn’t the serated nds end cap a bit lairy to be tightening against a carbon dropout?

  • You seem to have a different set of adapters to me (also Kickr v5) but my adapter for 142x12 looks like the third one down in your pic. Easiest way to check is measure, or just offer up your bike and see if it fits. Should be easy enough to see if it's out.
Do you take your bike on and off regularly? If so, the serrations could wear out your carbon dropout. In your position I would just file down the serrations so they were less aggressive or non existant.

  • Nice one, cheers.

Yes I take the bike on and off regularly, agree the serrations might be an issue long term.

I tried the third one down in the photo as well as an equivalent chamfered one which is marginally smaller, as in less than 0.5mm difference. Weirdly the third one down was throwing out the shifting of the three smallest sprockets which is odd as I indexed everything meticulously yesterday and it was shifting perfectly during a 90km ride on the road today.

I believe the two chamfered ones are what wahoo issued after there were issues with specific bikes not fitting eg Cervelos

  • What zone do people find most loathsome on their turbo trainer? Does it change for you?

I used to hate all the sprinty vo2max stuff but these days it’s the threshold stuff that just grinds me to a halt. What can I do to make these workouts less hideous.

Also shorts for turbo? I am wearing out many of my old bibshorts, straps are fraying, pads are getting twisted up and loose in the wash etc.

Are there any particular shorts or bib shorts people recommend for turbo training?

  • Maybe do lactate clearance stuff instead of steady state threshold. There's more variety to be had and it's mostly the same adaptations. Plenty of internet resources on what to do.

I'm about to do a tonne of indoor and will probably just get some dhb stuff.

  • I always find over-unders a bit less of grind than straight threshold.

When did you last do an FTP test? Only needs to be a few watts out and you’re on struggle street.

  • I just use trainer road and their ai ftp estimate. FTP has been creeping upwards over the last 12 months but my heart sinks when TR suggests a threshold workout. As I am not training for anything in particular I just use their train now option for a workout suggestion.

It might also be that threshold is possibly the zone I least need given my outdoor riding is predominantly emtb these days.

  • I used Trainerroad and always dreaded long threshold stints. You can always go for shorter intervals for the same thing

  • What zone do people find most loathsome on their turbo trainer?

Anything which has zone 3 in it. Not enough to be "work", but too much to recover between efforts.

I find I can usually lean into the threshold stuff, as long as I have something to watch.

  • Today TrainerRoad told me I have hit the dizzying heights of 3W/kg. Given all I ever aspired to was membership of the now defunct EC1 Collective is it time for me to retire from cycling?

  • Need to buy a budget (read cheap) trainer, what’s the forum recommendation?

  • Going rate for a lightly used kickr core? £300 sound about right?

  • Excuse my stupidity here but do I need any sort axle adapter to put a frame with 135mm QR dropouts on to a trainer that has been used with a road frame with 130mm spacing?

  • On a direct drive trainer, there's usually a wider end cap you can swap out on the non-drive side

This end cap will be in that little bag you put somewhere safe

  • What sort of bike is it for? I have a FluidTrainer sat here that needs a "pre-disc brake" home.
