• Hello Lufguss hivemind.

This Dave Yates-built 753 frame is winging its way to me and I’m wondering what to do to build it up. It’s going to get a modern groupset so I can use a set of 50mm carbon wheels I’ve got hanging about.

The seat post and headset are Dura Ace so that could be a direction to go in but…. Money. Was considering 9000 chainset and the rest in Ultegra.

I do like Campag on older bikes though.

I’m told the bike was built for the Ever Ready Halfords team before being resprayed. As a nod to that I’m thinking black ITM bars and stem, white tape, white cables.

  • How I approach it:

    Step 1:

    • frame for 7s or more (130mm): option for modern groupset
    • frame for 6s or less: no modern groupset, too much trouble

Step 2: Groupset (if modern groupset option):

    • Silver:
      • 11s new Campagnolo centaur (but with skeleton brakes) or 2nd hand dura-ace 9000
      • Silver 105 is painted and not polished, to avoid
      • 10s or below: many options
      • Specialite TA carmina cranks are a nice option
    • Black:
      • many options but Campagnolo Chorus has the best modern option price/look/feel ratio

    Step 3: wheels

    • Silver: very painful to find
    • Black: a lot

    Step 4: Cockpit

    • Silver: Classic stem: Cinelli / Deda / Nitto
    • Black: Modern stem
  • Thanks.

It’s 126mm spacing but I’ve spread stays before to take a wider hub. Really no drama.

I love the look of Centaur but 9000 is a no brainer if I can pick up a full groupset for not much more than £400.
