• I don't think there's any such thing as a fan of Cyclo Benelux!

  • Ah, thanks both :)

  • Just being pragmatic if no original part is found 🙂

  • A Pre-War Hounslow Club Run

I thought this pic to be relevant to this thread as it shows pre 1950's bikes as they were actually used.

Not much is known about the photo, but it's been suggested that the figure sixth from the left is Albert Derbyshire who was the first post war BBAR Champion.

Derbyshire won that Championship in Calleva colours (well he would have done if everyone had not still been restricted to black!), but this is clearly not a Calleva group since there are women present.

It's striking that everyone looks young and happy.

  • Pre-War...everyone looks young and happy

I wonder how many of them never got a chance to look old.

  • Smashing photo, couple of tandems at the back too.

  • Perhaps this fits here. I doubt it's pre 50s, but it's certainly an old, vintage rat.

I just removed the drop bars and fitted these swept back bars. Seeing that RH on the other page makes me regret the decision.

If you think that's old, you must be young. To me, it has 1980s written all over it.

  • Entries close soon for this

If you're on here, you can ride under the LFGSS.CC banner if you don't already have a club. Apparently Heritage bikes will run after all the modern solos, so the start time will likely be no earlier than 1100

  • A Cotter Pin

This is the worst I've ever seen.

The problem was at least partly caused by the rider not realising that the slack he could feel through the left hand crank was actually caused by looseness on the right hand side. The bike was always ridden fixed, and this is a feature of fixed - one worth knowing about.

The crank (a Williams C34) had suffered some damage - the bore for the spindle is a bit enlarged through wear but, even so, a new cotter was all that was needed to make it rideable.

I realise this might have gone in Mechanics and Fixing, but I thought anything to do with cotter pins was a bit too olden days for that column.

  • Good god, that's bad.
The fact that the opposite side crank is the one that feels loose when it's not has caught me ought a few times with cotters. I should remember but it's hard to go against what your body 'feels' when riding.

  • Is the B15 saddle oval badge or the newer (well, 60s onwards!) design?

  • Oh wow, it’s properly chewed that up!

  • Not oval or pre 1954 (that's when it changed style). Is Brooks only brand you are looking for?

  • Just looking for an narrowish early/mid 50s leather saddle that's not too much. Didn't realise the brooks badge style changed that early though.

  • I have found two:
Mansfield narrow saddle that is from around then or perhaps earlier
    Brooks oval badge

Both no rips, Brooks more weathered look (sun/rain perhaps) but also less £.

BTW - history of Brooks badges https://www.kurtkaminer.com/brooksbadges.html

  • These both look good. I'm picking up the frame I want a saddle for tomorrow hopefully. (A 50s Gillott spearpoint) So If your selling these too I'll message you after I've collected it and have an idea what might suit.

  • Ah nice - mine is in the loft awaiting build, after being repaired and painted by Waz Bros. One on the left, 1951.

  • Sadly this one seems to have non original forks, so the hunt is on for either Gillott forks or at least appropriate period ones

  • 1940s "gravel bikes", though it looks a bit muddy. From father's collection, so most likely Sussex Downs
