Hayfever

  • A few days of being in the park and garden have put me in a bad way.

  • Had to do an emergency stop on Friday's ride as I went from fine to eyes-watering-so-badly-I'm-effectively-blind in about 2 seconds. Which is alright, I guess, unless you happen to be going down a massive fucking hill at about 35mph.

  • Interested in hearing anecdotes of side-effects suspected to be due to taking cetirizine.

Not feeling myself at the moment - and taking cetirizine for hayfever - and curious if it could be related.

  • i feel more/less spaced on some of them, though difficult to distinguish what is the anti-histamine and what the hayfever.
much improved since switching to fexofenadine, I dont know anyone who has tried fexofenadine and gone back to one of the others, it seems better all round (although a little more expensive). I occasionally supplement with a cetirizine (probably not medically recommended).

  • Has anyone (successfully) used any of these air purifiers (blueair/dyson/another) to help alleviate hayfever symptoms. Must be my worst year and I’m looking at all avenues to help! Thanks

Yep, my gf locked herself in the lounge, shutting all shut all windows and starting the air purifier running early morning in order to do any kind of WFH.

  • I have mentioned nettle stings before, reflecting once more...

I got symptoms bad Monday eve, still bad first thing Tues early. Found a nettle in garden, stung knee, no symptoms by 11am. Still no symptoms.

I'm not saying direct cause / effect. It is unusual and makes no sense, it is a consistent response I have found to be helpful though.

  • Weird, my hayfever is much better than it used to be, still pretty snotty but rarely get the painful throat and eyes of old. I do have massive, over the top reactions to bug bites instead and have had a few itchy bastard bites on the go since the start of what's meant to have been spring.

  • I hate my garden and outside my house in general UFN. It all reeks of spunky sweet chestnut jism. The air is thick with it.

  • Yeh I've been feeling spaced and wondered the same as you: hayfever or anti-histamine.

I'm trying a couple of days off them (still feel spaced).

  • Thanks for the recommendation (on the previous page). Never tried of them but just started a new box this morning so will see how I get on.

  • My throat got itchy AF last night, serves me right.

  • About 2 weeks post Kenalog injection, any symptoms I have are pretty mild. I've had a cold/chest injection, so unclear how much of the sneezing, sore throat and coughing are cold related and hayfever related, but I wasn't as miserable as expected, so thats a win.

  • Interested in hearing anecdotes of side-effects suspected to be due to taking cetirizine.

I've just come out of what felt like a horrible hole due to taking cetirizine - sleepy, sluggish, brain fog, feel like shit just want her back etc. Doesn't even work that well on the symptoms of hayfever for me.

Had to switch from loratradine because while it totally dealt with my hayfever symptoms and I feel fucking AMAZING when I'm on it but this becomes somewhat inconvenient at bedtime when I can't get to sleep for hours because I'm manic and full of energy (I wonder if this is what @rhb meant by making them "...very, erm, intense." Or if that was different).

In both cases first few days are fine but it's when I get beyond that.

Anyway after @zigbit and @sidewinder recommended Fexofenadine I'm on day two of it and no hayfever symptoms and seem to be rapidly feeling like a normal human instead of almost feeling like I'm on speed or in a K hole so that's promising...

I would add that this year has been the worst hayfever year for me for a long time.

  • Just for balance and to reiterate that really the only thing to do is figure out which works best for you, I have switched back to citirizine after trying fexofenadine for about 6 weeks. I've been struggling with low mood for the past year or so and belatedly realised that a real escalation in depression symptoms had coincided with allevia. Back to citirizine and symptoms and mood are much improved.

The thing I'd urge people to try is mometasone furoate, branded as clarinaze and available over the counter in larger bootses. It doesn't seem to be as popular as the two main nasal treatments but really made a significant difference for me.

  • Thanks mate. Glad the fenofexadine seems to be working!

Yeh it’s been particularly bad this year, it seems. It’s drying my eyes out much more than usual. Which is a pain.

  • manic and full of energy

It was more variable mood / rage. I have the above anyway by default, hayfever meds amplified the emotional dysregulation.

Still sneezy/sniffle/itchy eye symptom free following last weeks nettle encounter (plus a couple of accidental ones in the garden too).

  • Currently aboard and taking Fexofenadine for hayfever but realised I have had no insect bites swell up so far which is unheard of for me, normally react badly and look like I have a boiled egg stuck to my arm, leg, wherever they choose to bite

  • I've ordered some Fexofenadine off the back of this thread which I hope will help me out. The loratadine I usually take has been fine but there's often a point in the day where I get a bit worse. I react really badly to grass when I've been sitting on it or on a walk with long grasses brushing against my legs as well so hoping it might help out there mostly.

  • Interesting reading everyone’s experiences with side effects.

“Coming out of a hole” is a pretty accurate description of it having stopped taking them. Obviously the hay fever has been pretty bad lately but way better than wanting to walk off into the sunset.

  • My worst three episodes this year have been when it’s pouring with rain.

  • I only developed hay fever in my early 30s, and have never had it this late in the year- anyone else feel like they've got itchy needles in their tear ducts at the moment?

Worried I've suddenly become allergic to my cat since getting back from holiday.

  • Can still be weed pollen season, I tend to have to take tablets at the beginning of Summer, then often a gap in ~Autumn, then often late Summer-nowish (though am managing without this year) hayfever is I think a coverall term, I dont think most people are allergic to all pollens and think fungal spores can also cause similar symptoms, with again variable timings for when this might be bad.
