What a finish. Even my parents who couldn't care less about cycling were fully invested

It does seem to me like a giant fuck-up by the chasing group, managed by a rusty Wout. But I am a bit ignorant. What do those in the know think?

Cavendish didn't do as badly as it looked - there were another 70 or so riders only 10 minutes ahead of his group at the end.

A hard day like that meant any team with a sprinter still in contention only had a couple of riders to chase in the closing kilometres, by which time the gap was, just, big enough for the DSM duo to hold on.

If they'd got organised just a little sooner.....maybe the teams just underestimated van den Broek the new boy? Nobody knew he was such an exceptional TTer? Mad strength.

I’d be impressed. Did you watch all of today? He was in very bad shape at about 140 to go. Thought he was done there and then. I’d have thought more likely the heat than sickness?
