  • Apparently you get called far-right if you dare disagree with anything that woke lefty lunatics (such as Sunak, one assumes) say.

  • It's interesting, Rupert was widely expected to have backed Labour by now.

Despite his reputation as a Kingmaker, the reality is he normally aligns himself with the party that are expected to win. E.g. By all accounts he was not a fan of Trump but backed him when it was clear he was going to win.

Does this mean Murdoch thinks Labour won't win? Or is he just too busy getting to know wife number five?

  • And they sodding applauded him. That git would turn up at a school assembly

  • A sensible and pragmatic decision IMO. Two months is not much time, and if it goes wrong that would be blowback on Labour in the first 100 days. Not good.

  • I miss having f&c in Redcar when I was a kid. Probably begging for an ice-cream from pacittos afterwards.

    Miss my grandparents most.

  • IANAL but the VAT relief is an exemption from what would normally be paid, and Labour's plan is to end the exemption, so the tax situation reverts to 'usual'.

On the face of it I can imagine it would therefore be quite hard to argue that ending a temporary exemption is illegal.

  • Beautiful

  • But won’t anyone think of those kids at Winchester, if this goes through they will miss out on Sky tv

  • Or even worse... go to to state school!

(FWIW I think this will happen more than some expect, but change isn't easy and another reason not to rush it in)

  • State school?!?!?!

    You absolute monster

  • This is the same Lord Pannick that says Manchester City haven’t broken premier league spending limits over 100 times.

  • Sounds like a keen legal mind

  • He’s personally been buying them or claims on expenses ie the tax payer is buying fish and chips for everyone

  • Farage getting flak on the QT Leaders Debate, Fiona Bruce even quoted the racist twat who I know who is standing for Reform in Derbyshire who Farage, bravely as ever, disavowed

  • He is. Seriously. One of the best legal minds of this generation. But like anyone else, he needs to earn a living.

  • South Croydon, as a Borough, includes places like Coulsdon and, I guess, Addiscombe which are nice.

  • Addiscombe which are nice

    Citation needed.

  • Fair enough but he’s hardly on the breadline or part of the taxi rank system, he can pick and choose

  • Can he claim expenses? It would be a campaign expense so party political

  • Would have to be a fucking impressive citation

  • Fair enough but he’s hardly on the breadline or part of the taxi rank system

The cab rank rule would apply to him. He's currently a barrister in private practice, and so will be bound by the Bar Standards Board Code of Conduct, which includes the cab rank rule.

  • Ah ok, thanks for clarifying, just thought it was strange that he’s got both the Man City and private school fees gigs

  • On the face of it I can imagine it would therefore be quite hard to argue that ending a temporary exemption is illegal.

It's not temporary. Charities have never had to charge VAT, and schools have had charitable status since the Statute of Elizabeth in 1601. Pretty well-established.

  • “Nigel Farage has claimed that he has ‘done more to drive the far-right out of British politics than anybody else alive’.”

    This explains a lot
