Thanks - good options all.
Shand stoater rohloff looks closest to what I'm after thanks. Can't quite get over price tag though. Thorn Mercury Mk3 looks close to - if I could fit drop bars to it.
I have a Day One which I use for commuting set up with flat bars. It's really agricultural and doesn't really inspire me to put the miles in on, hence the preference for something a bit nicer . -

I always shill thorn, I think there should be more effort in rescuing them from the actual company and building them up into cool and handsome bikes. Mercury is just a Club Tour for a hub gear, and I really like my club tour.

Anyone ever heard of or own one of these https://www.cicliblume.it/en/bici/country-uomo_7r/
Can they be bought in the U.K.?

here's my current functional bike
in the past (like many here) I've spent a lot of time, effort, and money building 'lock up bikes' that actually turn out to become quite sentimental
this time I took a different approach, nabbed an aluminium hybrid from ebay for less than the cost of a 90s mtb. Added an Amazon rack, some On-One bars, ergon copy grips, and a basic 1x crankset. It all came in at a shade over 200 schmackers
Its liberating actually riding/locking something that I genuinely do not care about
it's got hydraulic discs, and I rode directly over a glass bottle and down a flight of stairs and nothing bad happened

This is the way forward for don’t worry rides. I built a Boredman version of this last week for a college, who liked the idea of my flat bar MonsterShopper™️ Sequoia. Everything came from eBay and or ali, it all fitted together, it’s got gravelly tyres, rides nice and came in for a claimed <£500. I’ll try and get a pic if they’ll let me.
Oh and it’s 12speed deore which is nice. -

I love how over the top English's igh/commuter/winter bikes are. His personal commuter is pretty rad and has seen big miles and a two gear hubs. Hopefully they're all used as much as his.

I think the convergence of purely utilitarian use/intent with the relatively aggressive position that makes it work for me. If it were more upright with swept bars, it would still be cool. But, not as cool.

Wow those lines

The integrated seat/rack stays are really cool.

Agreed. I also always like the look of the narrow gauge tubes he uses for seat stays.

Brilliant, but looking at the downtube he needs a new front mudguard that wraps around the tyre a bit
-
• #27772
Yeah, I've wondered about how functional those guards actually are. He lives in a rainy, or at least wet place and doesn't drive if I remember correctly. He made the guards himself, but I would assume more coverage would needed to really do much good.

100% agree, i've been watching specialized serius, bmc, giants and orbeas to do the same thing.
100% a Genesis Day One. The newer ones don't necessarily tick the "classic steel looks" box, they're a bit agricultural and are aluminium. I've got one from a few years ago that's much nicer looking and (gaspipe) steel.
